IRVINE, Calif. - Katie Hedley scored the 100th goal of her career and Amanda Stepp continued her year-long scoring streak, but it was not enough as the No. 11 Arizona State University water polo team fell to No. 6 San Jose State, 9-6, Saturday in the first round of the UC Irvine Anteater Invitational in Irvine, Calif. The Sun Devils slipped to 1-5 overall on the season after their second loss to the Spartans on the year.

SJSU took an early lead, carrying a 2-1 lead into the second quarter of play. There, both teams tallied three goals each to give the Spartans a 5-4 halftime lead. After each side scored once each in the third, SJSU outscored ASU, 3-1, in the final quarter for the 9-6 final.

Hedley, who entered the weekend with 99 career goals, led the team with two goals on the day while Lindsay Williams, Amanda Stepp, Addison Doud and Bonnie Chapman each scored once. For Stepp, her goal marked the sixth game in a row the rookie has scored in to open her collegiate career. She also added three assists.

Defensively, Caylinn Wallace recorded 10 saves in the contest while Katy Lawlor recorded one as she blocked a shot after Wallace had been excluded. Lawlor added one steal while Ali Gronow tallied two.

The Sun Devils will next face No. 16 Michigan at 5:45 p.m. PT Saturday.
