TEMPE, Ariz. The No. 24 Arizona State Women's Tennis team were at their finest Satruday afternoon as they swept the Washington State Cougars 7-0, winning all nine singles and doubles matches on the day. The Sun Devils improve to 6-1 on the season and a perfect 2-0 in conference play.
The Sun Devils started off on the right foot in doubles going three-for-three with the Devil duo of Sabrina Capannolo and Jessica Leitch leading the way with an 8-3 win over WSU's Ashley Spicer and Amy Toth. The No. 8 duo of Kady Pooler and Roxanne Clarke and their teammates Rebecca Rankin and Nadia Abdala paired up to win their doubles sets at 8-4 apiece.
In singles, the Devils came out strong against the Cougars with only one match going past two sets as Roxanne Clarke topped Marjolein van de Ven 6-4, 2-6 and (1-0) in a tiebreak. Her fellow Sun Devils all rallied to beat their Cougar opponents in straight sets, with Rebecca Rankin having a near-perfect match topping Bianca Selaru 6-1, 6-0.
The Sun Devils are now 6-1 on the year with more conference play approaching next weekend as they host #1 Stanford and #11 California next weekend in Tempe at ASU's Whiteman Tennis Center. The Sun Devils will face the Cardinal Friday at 1:30 p.m. and the Bears at noon on Saturday.
