PALO ALTO, Calif. - The No. 7 Arizona State University water polo suffered a 16-7 setback at No. 3 Stanford Sunday morning to finish in fourth place of Group B at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. The Sun Devils slipped to 0-3 overall on the season with the loss.
The Sun Devils kept the score close throughout much of the contest and trailed 5-2 at the end of one quarter of play. The second stanza saw the host Cardinal again outscore the visitors, 5-2, to take a 10-4 lead into the intermission before scoring three more times in each of the next two quarters while ASU was limited to two goals in the third and one in the fourth.
Overall, Kim Buck and Lindsay Williams each scored a pair of goals to pace the offense while Amanda Stepp, Addison Doud and Bonnie Chapman added single scores in the contest. Doud, Chapman and Ashley Bower added assists to three of the goals scored on the day.
Defensively, Caylinn Wallace stopped five Cardinal shots and recorded three steals while Chapman stole four balls in the field. Also recording steals in the game were Bower with two and both Jennifer Campo and Williams each recording one steal.
The Sun Devils will now face No. 20 Indiana at 12:30 p.m. PT with the winner finishing seventh in the tournament.
