Tempe, Ariz. - In front of a season-high attendance Friday night, the #8 Sun Devil Softball Team fell in a tough 7-4 loss to the #2 UCLA Bruins, (31-3, 3-1 Pac-10) dropping the Sun Devils to 37-4 on the season with an even 1-1 record in Pac-10 play.
Powered by four home runs, two for third-baseman, Andrea Duran, and solid pitching from Anjelica Selden, who struck out 12 and allowed only five hits, the Bruins proved to be too much for the Sun Devils, even with ASU's two long balls.
UCLA grabbed the lead early as ASU gave up a lead-off home run to Andrea Duran in the top of the first, followed by a single from Krista Colburn, which was later plated by a sacrifice fly to center field as the Bruins jumped out 2-0.
The Bruin scoring rally continued in the third as they tacked on three more in third off of two UCLA home runs from Krista Colburn and Emily Zaplatusch, giving them a 5-0 cushion. The Sun Devils came back to make it a game in the third though with two out and two on as Kaitlin Cochran launched a long ball over left center to bring the score to 5-3.
The home run derby wasn't over though as UCLA's Andrea Duran hit another over the fence adding two to the Bruins tab. ASU answered with a solo shot to left center from Rhiannon Baca bringing the score to 7-4 by the end of the fourth in favor of the Bruins.
ASU rallied back in the bottom of the seventh though, loading the bases up with only one out, but back-to-back strikeouts for Selden put away the game for the Bruins.
The Sun Devils hit the field again tomorrow as they take on the #14 Washington Huskies at 7 p.m. in Tempe at Farrington Stadium.
