Tucson, Ariz. - The No. 25 Arizona State Sun Devil women's tennis team earned a win in its regular season finale on Saturday, defeating the No. 35 Arizona Wildcats, 5-2, at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center in Tucson. The Pac-10 Conference win improved the Sun Devils final regular-season record to 13-8 and an even 4-4 in conference play.
The Sun Devils swept the doubles competition, winning at all three flights. No. 19 Roxanne Clarke and Kady Pooler got on the board quickly for the Sun Devils with an 8-1 win over Stephanie Balzert and Juliette Mavroleon. ASU's teams of Sabrina Capannolo-Jessica Leitch and Wendy Pilecka-Rebecca Rankin were also victorious, both winning 8-6.
In singles play, the Sun Devils won in four of six spots to clinch the dual match victory. No. 120 Capannolo defeated No. 38 Danielle Steinberg in the first flight, 6-1, 6-4, her second straight win against Steinberg. Pooler was also victorious for the Devils, upsetting No. 68 Mavroleon, 7-6, 6-3. Leitch and Laila Abdala also earned victories for the Sun Devils in the fifth and sixth flights respectively. UA earned its two points with victories in the second and fourth spots against No. 74 Clarke (def. by Balzert, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2) and Rankin (def. by Jakolew, 7-6, 6-4).
The Sun Devils will head to Ojai, Calif. next weekend to compete in the Pac-10 Championships in their final tune-up before NCAA Tournament play begins in May.
