TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) -- Serge Angounou scored 14 points and Arizona State had their best defensive effort in 57 years as they beat Colgate 52-36 Tuesday.
Christian Polk added 10 points and Jeff Pendergraph had 10 points and a career-high 19 rebounds for the Sun Devils (5-4), who snapped a two-game losing streak.
Pendergraph's 19 rebounds were the most by a Sun Devil since Mike Batiste grabbed 20 against Wagner on Nov. 19, 1997.
Entering this season, Angounou was 6-of-33 (.182) from the three-point stripe but after hitting his first four against Colgate he is 16-of-31 (.516) this year. He is averaging 14 points and nine boards in his past five games, including 13-of-21 (.619) from the three-point stripe in that time.
Colgate's 36 points were the fewest allowed by an Arizona State team since a 47-34 victory over Washington (St. Louis) in 1949-50.
Jon Simon scored 15 points before fouling out with 1:25 remaining to lead the Red Raiders. Colgate (4-5) lost its fourth straight.
Polk's 3-pointer with 11:50 left in the game capped a 19-2 run to open the second half and gave Arizona State its largest lead, 39-14.
The Red Raiders were held scoreless for nearly eight minutes after hitting on their first field-goal attempt of the second half.
But Simon then scored five straight points, triggering a 7-0 run that cut Arizona State's lead to 18. Simon then sparked another 7-0 run with a driving layup and a 3-pointer that pulled Colgate within 43-32 with 4:23 remaining.
But the Sun Devils hit 3-of-4 free throws over the final two minutes to secure the win.
ASU led 20-12 at the half. It marked the lowest points at halftime by an ASU opponent since the Sun Devils led Old Dominion 36-12 at intermission on Jan. 7, 1995.
