Sammamish, Wash. - The fifth-ranked Arizona State women's golf team holds the top spot after the first round of the 2006 Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational. ASU shot an 11-over 299 to finish day one in first place.
Coach Melissa Luellen was pleased with the way her players competed in the first round. "I'm very pleased with Charmaine Erasmus, she really stepped up and had a very competitive round," said Luellen. "She played well but struggled on sixteen and seventeen."
Junior Camila Sola led the Devils with a 1-over 73 to tie for fifth place. Sola recorded four birdies in the first round, including back to back birdies on holes four and five. Freshman Juliana Murcia shot a 2-over 74 to tie for eighth place. Senior Charmaine Erasmus is currently tied for 12th after shooting a 3-over 75. Sophomore Jennifer Osborn, who won the Edean Ihlanfeldt last year, shot a 5-over 77 to tie for 29th. Junior Brooke Todare in 76th place after shooting a 19-over 91.
"Jennifer had a hard position coming in as defending champion," said Luellen. "She struggled on the front nine, but calmed herself down and played well on the back nine."
The second round of the Edean Ihlanfelt will continue tomorrow at the par 72, 6,130-yard Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Wash.
