Tempe, Ariz. - The 26 Arizona State Sun Devils women's tennis team handily defeated the UC Davis Aggies, 7-0, in a dual match played at the in The Sun Devils posted victories in all nine matches, as well as a victory in an exhibition match to earn the 7-0 match sweep and improve their season record to 3-0.
The Sun Devils began the doubles competition strong. Comfortable in the number one spot, the team of Roxanne Clarke (, ) and Kady Pooler (, ) got back on track with an 8-3 win over Ally Muller and Nancy Mok of . They jumped out to a very early lead at 5-0 and looked dominant throughout the match. Jessica Leitch (, ) and Wendy Pilecka () teamed up to play in the second spot against UC Davis' Robin Guier and Jenna Kappel and came away with a victory. After dropping the first game of the pro set, they won the next four straight before clinching the match at 8-4 and the doubles point. Rebecca Rankin (, ) and Laila Abdala () also kept the Devils perfect in doubles with an 8-3 victory over Audrey Wingo and Emma Shapiro. They also lost the first game, but never trailed again in the match after winning the next three straight.
In the singles competition, Kady Pooler played in the number one spot against Ally Muller, winning the match 6-2, 6-2. Pooler shook off some early match jitters and recovered from a 2-1 deficit, winning the final five games of the set. She staked herself an early 4-1 lead in the second set to cruise to a 6-2 match victory. Roxanne Clarke recorded a point for the Sun Devils in the number two spot, defeating Robin Guier, 6-3, 6-0. Clarke came out strong and started with a 4-1 lead before finishing off the set. Clarke never looked back from there and swept the second set to take the point. Rebecca Rankin defeated Audrey Wingo in the third spot by a 6-0, 6-1 score. Rankin was in command of the match from the get-go, winning 12 of 13 games on the day.
In the final three singles spots, Wendy Pilecka bounced back from a setback in Saturday's singles to defeat Jenna Kappel, 6-3, 6-1 in the number four spot. Sophomore Jessica Leitch and freshman Laila Abdala looked impressive at the bottom of the order, both defeating their opponents 6-0, 6-1. Abdala took on Nancy Mok in the fifth spot, and quickly polished off the first set 6-0. Following a loss in the first game of the second set, Abdala won six straight games again to win the match.
In an exhibition match, freshman Erica Schweyer () earned her first collegiate victory, defeating Jessica Harris, 6-2, 6-4. Schweyer trailed midway through the second set, but battled back for the win.
The Sun Devils have jumped out to a 3-0 start on the season and will return to action in two weeks, when they host three matches at the . The Devils take on on February 10 (1:30 p.m. MST), followed by No. 52 Denver on February 11 (12:00 p.m. MST) and Cal Poly on February 12 (10:00 a.m. MST).
