TEMPE, Ariz. - For the second time at home this season, the Arizona State University soccer team dropped a tough 1-0 decision, this time falling to visiting Pepperdine, as the two teams played a fast-paced match Sunday afternoon at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium. The Sun Devils slipped to 4-2-2 overall on the season with the Waves improved to 5-1-2.
The lone goal came in the first half as Emily Wynne sent a pass across the box to McKenzie Hill, who hit it home on the short side for what would stand as the winning score. Although neither team was able to score again, both sides had several chances that were thwarted by solid goalkeeping play.
Sun Devil keeper Kim Bingham and Waves keeper Kayla Stolte each recorded four saves with both coming up big at times. In the first half, Bingham made two diving saves to keep the score close while the second half of play saw Stolte also make a sliding stop on a Brittney Doty breakaway attempt to preserve the win.
Offensively, Alissa Oldenkamp led the offense with three shots while Lara Kezer, Dante Perea and Doty each sent two shots toward the goal. The match was fairly even throughout as PU out-shot ASU, 15-12 while both teams took just one corner kick each.
Arizona State will return to the road next weekend as the Sun Devils are set to face San Diego in a 12 p.m. match Sunday, September 24, the Sun Devils' lone match of the weekend.
