The Sun Devils opened the 2006 volleyball season in style, sweeping the Northeastern Huskies during the first day of the Hilton Phoenix/East Mesa Sun Devil Volleyball Classic. ASU won 30-24, 30-26 and 30-21, thanks to the 16 kills of Margie Giordano and 16 digs from Sydney Donahue.

came out strong in their first action of the year, trailing a total of once over the course of the three games. The Sun Devils turned in a hit percentage of .274, taking control of the match from the outset to pick up the victory.

Margie Giordano was dominant all evening, turning in a .424 hitting percentage. Nicole Morton added 11 kills, and Rachel Mittelstaedt had 25 assists. Marina Mercer, playing for the first time since redshirting a year ago, added 17 helpers.

The Devils played steady throughout the match, as the Huskies mustered only six total ties. ASU held Northeastern to a .080 hitting percentage, holding them to a .025 percentage in Game 2.

The Sun Devils (1-0) will take on Utah Valley State on Saturday afternoon at noon, then Loyola Marymount at 7 PM. LMU outlasted UVSC in four games in the earlier contest.
