PALO ALTO, Calif. - The Stanford Cardinal were able to silence the Sun Devil bats, as ASU could must only three hits in a 7-1 loss at Sunken Diamond in Palo Alto. With the loss, the third straight for Arizona State, the Devils drop to 28-15, 7-6 in the Pac-10. Josh Satow took the loss, dropping him to 3-1 on the year.
Stanford jumped on the Devils early, going up 2-0 after one inning. Sun Devil starter Josh Satow did not record an out as all four Cardinal batters he faced picked up hits, and both runs were charged to him. Pat Bresnehan took over for Satow and was able to work out of a two-on, no out jam without allowing any more runs to score. But the Cardinal would strike again in the second, as Chris Minaker's RBI triple down the right field line off Bresnehan gave Stanford a 3-0 lead. Bresnehan ran into more trouble in the third when Cord Phelps knocked two more home with his two-out single up the middle. That made it 5-0 Stanford after three. Bresnehan lasted three and a third, allowing four runs on three hits.
The Cardinal would add one more in both the fourth and sixth, providing more than enough for starter Greg Reynolds. Reynolds went the distance, allowing only three hits and one run to up his record to 4-3. It was the first complete game of the year for Stanford.
Preston Paramore provided the only fireworks for ASU with his third home run of the season, a solo shot to right in the sixth. Ike Davis and Frank Mesa were the only other Sun Devils to manage hits off Reynolds.
The Devils and Cardinal will do it again tomorrow afternoon at 1 PM for game two of the three game series.
