LUBBOCK. Texas - On a windy night in West Texas, Texas Tech starter Aaron Odom dominated the Sun Devils batters, allowing only three hits in six innings as the Red Raiders beat Arizona State (27-12) 7-2 on Monday night in Lubbock.
Odom (3-2) allowed two runs in picking up the victory over ASU, who beat Texas Tech 13-5 in Tempe on February 28. Matt Trink took the loss, dropping his record to 2-1. He allowed three runs, one earned, in 1.1 innings of work. Trink allowed four hits and struck out two in the loss.
The Red Raiders thwarted a Sun Devil threat in the top of the first, when ASU had runners on first and second and no one out. Texas Tech escaped the jam unscathed, and didn't allow ASU to mount another offensive rally until the sixth.
TTU took advantage of their opportunities early on, scoring three times in the first and twice in the third to take a 5-0 lead. The Sun Devils would push two across in the top of the sixth, thanks to a Matt Hall bases loaded single off Odom. The Raiders ended the inning without any more runs scoring, shutting down the Sun Devil hitters from then on.
Texas Tech would bring in Colt Hynes for the final three innings, and he allowed only two hits to pick up his second save of the game. Tech would score one each in the seventh and eighth to end any chance of a Sun Devil comeback.
The Devils managed only five hits off the two Raiders pitchers after collecting 47 hits over the weekend against USC. Arizona State will get back to Pac-10 action this weekend, traveling to Los Angeles for a three game series with UCLA beginning Friday night from Jackie Robinson Stadium.
