TEMPE, Ariz. - The outdoor portion of the 2006 season got underway for the Arizona State University track and field program Friday night as the men's and women's hammer events were held under the lights of Joe Selleh Track at Sun Angel Stadium in Tempe as part of the 2006 Baldy Castillo Invitational.
The women led off the night with two entrants into the event that was ultimately won by Sun Devil Sarah Stevens, who was coming off a third-place showing at the 2006 NCAA Indoor Championships in the shot put last weekend. In the finals, Stevens popped a mark of 62.79m or 206-00 feet to record the second-longest toss in school history while qualifying for the regional meet and setting the meet record. Sara Shisslak also competed in the event and placed ninth with a toss of 50.91m (167-00).
On the men's side, all three entrants advanced to the final with Tomas Navaro leading the way with a 10th-place showing at 53.17m (174-05). Just behind him was Andrew Smith, who was 11th at 53.03m (174-0) and Andy Haas, 12th at 52.92m (173.7).
The meet concludes Saturday with field events starting at noon with the women's discus and the running events starting at 5:30 p.m. with the women's 100m hurdles.
