SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The No. 8 Arizona State University water polo team closed out its weekend at the Gaucho Invitational with an 8-6 defeat of host No. 11 UC Santa Barbara to finish ninth overall at the tournament being held in Santa Barbara, Calif. The Sun Devils improved to 9-3 overall after a 3-1 weekend that saw ASU defeat Brown (11-3), No. 13 UC Irvine (10-8) and UCSB all coming after a 4-2 setback to No. 9 San Diego State to open the weekend.
After both squads opened the game with two goals scored in the first quarter, the Sun Devils took command by outscoring the Gauchos 3-1 in both the second and third quarters. Leading 8-4, ASU allowed two goals while being held scoreless in the final stanza before hanging on to win.
Rookie sensations Addison Doud and Rowie Webster each scored two goals to pace the offense while Kim Buck, Katie Hedley, Katy Lawlor and Tessa Wyborny each tallied one score. Defensively, Caylinn Wallace recorded nine saves in the victory.
The Sun Devils return home for one game next weekend as they are set to play host to Pacific at 5:30 p.m. Friday night at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center on campus.
