TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 15 Arizona State women's gymnastics team posted its best score of the season to win the UNO's Classic Friday at Wells Fargo Arena in front of 1,321 fans, the eighth-largest crowd in school history. Finishing with a 196.95, the Sun Devils (9-3, 3-2) won three events, scoring their season-best in two of them. No. 17 Oregon State (10-6) took second 195.55, Boise State (9-4) placed third 192.275, and Wisconsin-Oshkosh (3-11) finished fourth 181.25.
The Sun Devils swept the all around competition. Senior All American Ashley Kelly won her 18th all-around, scoring a 39.6. Junior April Boone posted her personal best, a 39.5, to finish second. Freshman sensation Nicole Harris also compiled her personal best, a 39.425 to take third. Junior Cassandra Jusino placed fourth with a 39.275.
The Sun Devils dominated the vault, placing first with a 49.150. April Boone won the event while tying her season high 9.9. Kelly followed vaulting her way to a 9.875. Jusino and Lauren Powell tied for third with Boise State's Shaniece Craft, posting scores of 9.825. The Beavers placed second 48.625, the Broncos posted a 38.375 to finish third and the Titans took fourth with a 45.9.
The Sun Devils had their best score of the year with a 49.5 to finish first on bars. Coming into this weekend, it represents the best team bar score in the nation. Kelly handily won the apparatus with a 9.975, her highest bar score of the year. Harris placed second with her personal best, a 9.925. Boone followed Harris to again tie her career best and place third with a 9.9. Scoring a 9.875, Powell also performed her season best and tied fourth with Oregon State's Chrissy Lamun. Tiana Jean and Jusino also scored their season bests with a 9.825 and a 9.8, respectfully. The Beavers placed second on the bars with a 47.975. The Titans scored a 44.45.
The Sun Devils again scored their season best, this time on the beam, to win the event with a score of 49.175. Freshman Harris rebounded from the previous two meets to win the competition, posting her personal best of 9.925. Kelly, ranked third nationally, scored a 9.875, good enough to place second. Oregon State's Jami Lanz and Lamun tied for third with scores of 9.85. Sun Devil Ashlee Hinkle posted her career best, 9.825, to tie with teammate Boone for fifth. Oregon State finished second with a 48.850. Boise State placed third, scoring a 48.025.
The Sun Devils scored a 49.1 to place second on the floor exercise. Jusino tied her season best, 9.925, to win the event. The Beavers' Lamun placed second with a 9.9. Scoring 9.875, Kelly and Boone tied for third with Oregon State's Angela Morales. Harris scored a 9.825 to place seventh behind Oregon State's Lanz. Oregon State placed first on the floor exercise with a 49.15. Boise State posted a 48.125 and Wisc. Oshkosh scored a 45.95.
The Sun Devils travel to northern California next week to take on California's Golden Bears on Friday March 3 at 7:30 p.m. They return to Wells Fargo Arena for Senior Night, Friday March 10 at 7:30 p.m. versus No. 7 Iowa State.
