PALO ALTO, Calif. - The No. 16 Arizona State University water polo halted its two-game losing streak in a big way Sunday afternoon as it upset its second Top 10 team in as many days, this time defeating No. 7 Michigan, 13-7, to place seventh in the Stanford Invitational. The Sun Devils, who opened the tournament with an 8-5 upset of No. 4 Hawaii, improved to 5-2 on the year while the Wolverines absorbed their fourth defeat in a row to fall to 6-4.
Prior to this weekend, the Sun Devils had only defeated three foes ranked in the Top 10 at the time of the game. Following its play in the Stanford Invitational, ASU nearly doubled its win total after upsetting the Rainbow Wahine and Wolverines. Both wins this weekend came against foes ranked higher than the previous three Top 10 upsets.
Against UM, nine different Sun Devils scored goals with four recording two each. Addison Doud (Fr., Laguna Beach, Calif.), Katie Hedley (Jr., Lake Forest, Calif.), Kimberlee Stevens (Jr., Lodi, Calif.) and Rowie Webster (Fr., Melbourne, Australia) each scored twice while single goals were scored by Elaine Bentley (Sr., San Diego, Calif.), Ashley Bower (Jr., Bondi Beach, Australia), Kim Buck (So., Lisle, Ill.), Heather Rempfer (Sr., Lodi, Calif.) and Raelyn Ritchie (Jr., Newport Beach, Calif.).
Defensively, Caylinn Wallace (So., Laguna Hills, Calif.) tied her season high with 13 saves while Windy Ballejos (Jr., Fontana, Calif.) recorded one save, the first of her career with the Sun Devils.
ASU will have the weekend off before playing host to No. 4 Hawaii in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center in Tempe. The game is slated to start at 6 p.m.
