TEMPE, Ariz. - With the season less than one week away, the No. 16 Arizona State University water polo team split its ranks among two squads and competed against one another in the Maroon and Gold Scrimmage Saturday afternoon at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center in Tempe. In the high-scoring affair, the Maroon defeated the Gold, 11-7.
The Maroon team was led by four players with multiple goals scored, including a hat-trick from freshman Addison Doud. Joining her in the scoring column were Ashley Bower, Katie Hedley and Raelyn Ritchie with two goals each while Adriane Mota and Kimberlee Stevens each adding solo goals. On the other side of the pool, Katy Lawlor netted a team-high three goals while Rowie Webster, who recently joined the team, added a pair of scores. The scoring was rounded out by Elaine Bentley and Kim Buck, each with one goal.
Defensively, starting goalie Caylinn Wallace was credited with 20 saves for the Gold while the Maroon played a pair of goalies for two quarters each as starter Wendy Ballejos recorded one save and Taylor Greenberg added six.
Both team scored twice in the first quarter before the Maroon side outscored the Gold, 4-2, for a 6-4 lead at halftime. The Maroon won then final two quarters, outscoring the Gold, 2-1, in the third quarter and 3-2 in the fourth for the 11-7 final score.
Arizona State will open their season in Riverside, Calif., this weekend with four games scheduled. On Friday night, the Sun Devils face Cal Baptist at 7 p.m. before playing in three games Saturday at the Lancer Invitational. During the tournament, ASU will face Pomona-Pitzer College at 8 a.m., Cal State San Bernardino at 11:45 a.m. and Cal State Bakersfield at 2:45 p.m.
