TEMPE, Ariz. - Senior Haley Stein scored her first career goal, but it was not enough as the Arizona State University soccer team suffered a 2-1 setback to visiting UNLV Sunday afternoon at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium in Tempe. The loss drops ASU's record to 2-2-0 overall this year while the Rebels improved to 3-1-0.
The Sun Devils took and early 1-0 lead as Stein (Santa Rosa, Calif.) tipped home a corner kick from Manya Makoski (Sr., Trumbull, Conn.) at the 15:18 mark. With ASU collapsing on the UNLV goal, Makoski floated a pass in from the corner that landed close to the near post where Stein got a foot on the ball to redirect it in for the score. Just of 10 minutes later, however, the Rebels would tie the score as Katie Carney received a pass at the top of the box before dribbling through two defenders and placing a shot into the lower left corner.
Following the intermission, the Sun Devils took control of the game and outshot their opponents, 12-3. With the time running low on the clock in the game, the Rebels struck for the game winner. After a loose ball in the midfield area was contested by both teams, a foul was called on ASU near the midfield stripe. On the ensuing free kick, UNLV's Nickie Olson played the ball into the center of the box looking for a teammate to head it home. But the ball did not find a person, instead bouncing high and just carrying over the outstretched hands of Sun Devil keeper Kim Bingham (Jr., Pleasanton, Calif.).
With their three-game home stand concluded, the Sun Devils hit the road next weekend as they are set to compete in the New Mexico Classic Sept. 9 and Sept. 11. ASU will meet Syracuse at noon Friday before finishing out the weekend with an 11 a.m. contest with Auburn on Sunday.
