TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State University soccer team played host to undefeated No. 12 BYU at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium Thursday night and battled with the Cougars throughout the evening. At the final whistle, however, the Sun Devils found themselves on the short end of a 3-1 decision in front of 734 loud fans. The loss dropped the Sun Devils' record to 5-4-1 on the season while the Cougars improved to 10-0-1 in 2005.

Throughout the first 45 minutes of play, both teams battled for control of the ball with ASU firing off eight shots and BYU taking six. None of those shots found the back of the net thanks in part to solid goal keeping and stingy defenses on both sides of the pitch. Kim Bingham (Jr., Pleasanton, Calif.) collected her lone save of the match in the first while Cougar keeper Erika Woodbury tallied five, including two diving stops and one a point-blank range.

Following the intermission, both squads returned to its physical play and offensive search for a score. The draw was broken at 57:07 as Jessica Harmon lobbed a free-kick into the 18-yard box where Katie Larkin fired a bullet from 10 yards out and just past the outstretched arms of Bingham. The Cougars struck again just 10 minutes later as Harmon again lobbed a free kick into the box. This time, Natalie Nate jumped into the air and headed home what would become the game-winning tally.

Just four minutes later, the Cougars went up by three as Jaime Beck headed a corner kick in from five yards out off a service from Bobbi Tillotson. Despite the deficit, the Sun Devils continued to push for a score and were rewarded in the 87th minute as Manya Makoski (Sr., Trumbull, Conn.) hammered home a shot from five yards out after receiving a deft pass from Elizabeth Bogus (Sr., Sandy, Utah). Bogus collected the ball and carried into the penalty area at the left of the keeper where she sent a pass through the box and past the keeper to a waiting Makoski.

Makoski's goal was just the third surrendered by the Cougars this season as they have outscored their opponents 26-3. Her score also gave her six for the season and 22 for her career, moving her into a tie for fifth on the school's all-time goal scoring and points list with Antoinette Marjanovic with 22 and 62, respectively. Bogus' helper moved her into a tie for sixth on the assists ledger with 15.

Arizona State returns to the home pitch at noon Sunday as the Sun Devils close out their non-conference slate against the Torreros of San Diego (3-6-0).
