TEMPE, Ariz. - Powered by Manya Makoski's two-goal performance, the Arizona State University soccer team rebounded from its season-opening loss to deliver a 5-2 defeat to visiting Weber State Sunday afternoon at the Sun Devil Soccer Stadium in Tempe. Despite a temperature of 110 degrees at the start of the match, the Sun Devils saw four different players tally on the day to move ASU to 1-1-0 on the season while dropping the Wildcats to 1-1-0.
Neither team waited long to find the back of the net of the contest with Makoski (Sr., Trumbull, Conn.) striking at 1:25 in the match for an early 1-0 lead. Fellow senior Elizabeth Bogus (Sr., Sandy, Utah) assisted on the goal as she broke through the defense before threading a through pass to a wide open Makoski who placed a shot into the upper right corner of the WSU net.
Despite the early lead, the Wildcats would respond at the 3:33 mark with Hayley McCoy breaking in behind the ASU defense and scoring from 15 yards out to know the match at one. But, just as WSU did to ASU, the Sun Devils returned the favor two minutes later as Courtney Crane (Jr., Oak Park, Calif.) netted her first goal of the season after firing a shot home at 5:35 following a loose ball in the box.
After a battle of field position for much of the first half, the Sun Devils struck again at 32:09 with Emily Coelho (Fr., Park City, Utah) scoring her first collegiate goal to push the ASU advantage to 3-1. Following a corner kick and the Wildcat defense trying the clear the ball, Kelley Bond (Sr., Ft. Collins, Colo.) collected the ball and chipped it over the defense where Coelho headed the pass just over keeper Kandice Golar for the score. But the first half scoring was not over yet as WSU again brought the deficit to one goal with Shaylee Stegen finding the top right corner from 20 yards out.
Following the intermission, the Sun Devils again went on the offensive and collected their fourth goal of the match as Makoski struck again at the 53:43 mark. Once again assisted by Bogus, Makoski collected the pass behind the defense and shot a low hard shot to the lower right corner of the goal for the 4-2 lead.
Nearly five minutes later, the scoring came to a close as Brittany Cooper (Sr., Albuquerque, N.M.), who nearly scored on several attempts on the day, finally found the back of the net at the 58:14 mark. With ASU pressing, Alissa Oldenkamp (So., Chandler, Ariz.) broke down the right side line and chipped a pass to the center of the goal where Golar looked to halt the attempt in the air. The ball caromed off the keeper's hands right to a waiting Cooper who placed the ball in the empty net.
Kim Bingham (Jr., Pleasanton, Calif.) started and played the entire match in the net for the Sun Devils, collecting four saves in 90 minutes of work. Her Wildcat counterpart, Golar, collected 10 saves in the same time frame. Offensively, the five goals scored by the Sun Devils were the most since ASU defeated Bowling Green, 5-1, on Aug. 30, 2003, in Hawaii.
The Sun Devils return to action next weekend with a pair of home contests. ASU opens the weekend Friday night at 7 p.m. when the Anteaters of UC Irvine visit Tempe. The Sun Devils close out the weekend with the Rebels of UNLV at 1 p.m. Sunday.
