The UNLV men's golf team won ASU Thunderbird Invitational for the first time in school history at the ASU Karsten Golf Course (par-71/7,025 yards) on Saturday. The Rebels shot a 7-over 859 (274-289-296) to top Pepperdine's 9-over 861 (285-284-292) in the 33rd annual event.
Two-time defending champion Arizona State, who had won the tournament five of the previous six years (1999-2001 and 2003-2004) and 13 times overall, finished at 17-over 869 (286-287-296) and in third place.
Strong winds resulted in high scores throughout the weekend, as UNLV's total was the highest by a Thunderbird champion since UCLA won the tournament with a 13-over 867 in 1998. Only two players in 79-man field broke par. The Rebels shot a tournament-best 10-under 274 in the opening round, but no team shot better than 284 the rest of the tournament.
Kipp Riehle, playing as an individual, shot a 7-under 206 (69-69-68) to become the first Arizona Wildcat to win the title. It marked the highest score by a champion since Brandon Ditullio of UCLA shot 5-under 211 in 1998.
Nathan Lashley of Arizona (68-70-74) was tied with Riehle after the first two rounds at the top of the leaderboard at 4-under and finished at 1-under 212 and in second place, while teammate Henry Liaw shot even-213 (68-73-73) and was tied for third.
Sun Devil Pat Moore shot a 68 in the opening round and finished tied for sixth at 1-over 214 (68-74-72).
Sophomore Niklas Lemke tied for 18th at 4-over 217 (72-69-76) while teammates Jesse Mueller (75-69-76) and Alejandro Canizares (73-75-72) both finished tied for 27th at 7-over 220. Canizares, who tied the tournament record last year with a 16-under 200 (65-66-69), was trying to become just the second repeat champion of the Invitational, joining Phil Mickelson who won medalist honors in 1991 and 1992. He entered the tournament with three tournament championships on the year and six in his three-year career.
Phil Telliard tied for 63rd at 15-over 228 (73-76-79).
ASU also fielded a four-man maroon team that shot the best score in the final round, a 7-over 291, and finished at 35-over 887 (293-303-291). Charly Simon finished tied for 15th at 3-over 216 (70-75-71). Others on the maroon squad included Lenny Park, who tied for 23rd with a 5-over 218 (75-71-72), Kendall Critchfield (tied for 51st with a 13-over 226 with rounds of 73-75-78) and Fredrik Andersson (tied for 59th at 14-over 227 with rounds of 75-82-70).
Oregon, which finished at 24-over 876 (295-286-295), was led by Gregg LaVoie who shot an even 213 (72-68-73). In addition to Arizona's trio of Riehle, Lashley and Liaw, only LaVoie and Matt VanCleave of Kansas State shot par or better. VanCleave finished at even-par 213 (72-68-73).
ASU next competes in the Stanford Invitational on April 16-17 and then competes in the Pac-10 Championship April 25-27 at Walla Walla, Wash.
