TUCSON, Ariz. - Manya Makoski netted two goals on assists from Brittany Cooper as the Arizona State University soccer team handed a 2-1 defeat to rival No. 25 Arizona Saturday night in Tucson at Murphey Field. The Sun Devils, who remained undefeated all-time against its intrastate rival at 10-0-1, improved to 9-6-3 overall on the year with a 4-2-1 mark in the Pac-10 while the Wildcats slipped to 9-5-3 overall and 4-2-1 in the conference.
The Sun Devils jumped out to an early lead as Makoski collected a pass from Cooper and found the back of the net at 16:54. Following the intermission, the Wildcats tied the match at one as Jennifer Klein tallied on a pass from London King at 54:23. But, less than 15 minutes later, Cooper again found Makoski who, once again, found the back of the net for what would become the game winning goal.
Both teams fired 17 shots with Sun Devil keeper Kim Bingham picking up the win on the strength of nine saves. Her counterpart, McCall Smith, tallied eight stops in the loss. ASU also held a large margin in corner kicks, 12-2.
Makoski became just the fifth player in Sun Devil history to record 70 or more points as her 24 goals and 22 assists give her an even 70 in her career. She also record the ninth game-winning score of her career (third most at ASU) and no has 22 points on the season with eight goals and six assists. Cooper moved into seventh all-time on the assists chart with 16.
The Sun Devils close out the regular season next weekend on the road as they head to Los Angeles to face USC and No. 4 UCLA. ASU meets the Trojans Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. before closing out the weekend with the Bruins Sunday afternoon.
