TEMPE, Ariz. - Despite outshooting its opponent by 27, the Arizona State University soccer team needed a second overtime period to post a 3-2 defeat of visiting UC Irvine Friday night at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium in Tempe. Senior Elizabeth Bogus collected her first two goals of the season at the most opportune times for the Sun Devils as her first strike tied the game before her second tally was the game winner.

ASU came out the blocks on offensive and controlled much of the first half action as the ball remained mostly in the UCI half of the pitch. Although the Sun Devils sported a 12-2 advantage in shots, the Anteaters were the only ones able to capitalize as Britney Webster scored her first goal of the season after being awarded a tally on an ASU own goal. Webster fired the ball into the box on a corner kick and, after bouncing off a defender, the ball slipped past the Sun Devil defense to give UCI a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute.

Following the intermission, ASU continued its onslaught of shots, adding another 15 in the stanza. This time, however, two shot would find their marks. At 61:10, Brittany Cooper (Sr., Albuquerque, N.M.) put the Sun Devils on the board and tied the match at one as she fired a half volley into the back of the net. Freshman Emily Coehlo (Park City, Utah) headed the ball over the defense to Cooper who in turn slammed it home for her second strike on the year.

With the clock running lower and lower and both teams fighting for the win, UCI took the advantage as Megan Ortiz fought through the Sun Devil defense on the right side of the 18-yard box and fired a shot into the opposite top corner to put the Anteaters ahead, 2-1, with less than six minutes remaining. That is when Bogus took over.

At the 85:48 mark, Bogus (Sr., Sandy, Utah) collected a pass at the top of the box and, similar to a basketball player in the post, dribbled through three players with several twists and turns to get free. Once in the clear, Bogus deftly placed her shot under the diving Anteater keeper on the lower right side to tie the game and eventually send it into overtime.

During the first extra period, both teams came close to scoring, but none closer than ASU on two occasions. With 3:37 remaining, Coehlo carried the ball and made a quick pass to Bogus who slipped a pass through the defense to a streaking Cooper. Cooper's shot went low and toward the right corner where UCI's Erin Henry just got a hand on the ball to make the save. Then, with 1:00 remaining, the Sun Devils were awarded a direct kick from 20 yards out. Cooper took the shot and the ball glanced off the cross bar and down to the ground before it was cleared.

With the final 10 minutes placed on the clock, ASU need just four minutes for Bogus to secure the victory. After several attempts on goal, Lauren Niblett (Jr., Chandler, Ariz.) collected a loose ball and launched a shot on goal from 25 yards away. The hard liner caromed off the hands of the keeper and allowed Bogus a shot at the empty net and the win.

Defensively, Sun Devil keeper Kim Bingham (Jr., Pleasanton, Calif.) recorded one save while her counterpart Henry posted 10.

ASU returns to action Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. when it plays host to UNLV at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium. The Rebels enter the contest following a 2-1 defeat of Utah State on the road Friday night. UNLV is 2-1-0.
