TEMPE, Ariz. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- The No. 22 Arizona State Sun Devils closed out the regular season with a 7-2 victory over Washington State to secure a series sweep on a sunny Sunday afternoon at Packard Stadium.
Earlier in the day, ASU found out it was selected as one of the 16 schools to host an NCAA Regional next weekend. With a current four-game winning streak, the Devils ended the regular season 34-22 overall and tied for third in the Pac-10 with USC at 15-9. ASU recorded an impressive 10-2 record in Pac-10 games at Packard Stadium, including series sweeps of Stanford, UCLA and Washington State. WSU ended the season 21-37 and 1-23 in league play.
Junior starting pitcher Tony Barnette (Federal Way, Wash.) earned the win giving up three hits in three scoreless innings to improve to 4-1 on the season. He struck out four and walked two in his fourth start of the season. Senior relief pitcher Ty Marotz (Crystal Lake, Ill.) also had a stellar outing, striking out three in 3.1 innings of two-hit ball.
Cougar senior starter James Freeman was roughed up for seven hits and five runs in three innings to take the loss. The lefty struck out three and walked four to finish the season 7-8. Reliever Dane Renkert held the Sun Devils to four hits and two runs over the final five innings.
ASU out-hit the Cougars 11-7 and had three players record multi-hit games. Freshman designated hitter Willy Fox (Scottsdale, Ariz.) went 3-for-4 with two RBI and freshman shortstop Andrew Romine (Lake Forest, Calif.) was 3-for-3 with three stolen bases and three runs scored. Senior third baseman Joey Hooft (Reno, Nev.) added two hits and also scored a run.
WSU third baseman Zach McAngus (2-for-4) and freshman first baseman Jim Murphy (2-for-3) led the Cougars at the plate.
Game Notes: ASU's five seniors (Ty Marotz, Jason Urquidez, Joey Hooft, Tuffy Gosewisch, Jeff Larish) were honored in a pregame ceremony and were presented with framed jerseys... junior Travis Buck, who will likely be selected in the first two rounds of the upcoming MLB Draft, was also honored during the ceremony... Gosewisch played only one inning before giving way to freshman Austin Stockfisch... Gosewisch watched the rest of the game from the stands with his parents by request of head coach Pat Murphy... Gosewisch threw out another attempted base stealer in the first inning and has thrown out seven of his last 10... Travis Buck extended his hitting streak to five games and has hits in 19 of his last 20 games... Buck leads the team hitting .388 (94-for-242) with 67 runs and 22 doubles... ASU scored in the first inning for the 19th time this season (15-4 record when scoring in the first)... sophomore center fielder Colin Curtis went 1-for-4 with a season-high-tying three RBI to extend his hitting streak to a career-high 10 games... freshman SS Andrew Romine recorded his 11th multi-hit game of the year and stole a career-high three bases... his 14 stolen bases move him into fourth place in the ASU freshman record books.
