TEMPE, Ariz. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- Arizona State senior left fielder Jeff Larish hit a three-run, wind-aided double that broke open a 10-run sixth inning and also added a towering three-run home run in the seventh to send the No. 22Sun Devils to a commanding 16-6 victory over Washington State Saturday evening at Winkles Field at Packard Stadium.
Larish (Tempe, Ariz.) finished 2-for-6 with a season-high six RBI. He belted his Pac-10 leading 17th home run of the season and with the 45th of his career moved into a tie for third place with Barry Bonds (1983-85) in the ASU career record books.
The Sun Devils won their third straight game to improve to 33-22 overall and moved into a tie for third place in the Pac-10 with USC at 14-9. Washington State dropped its third straight to fall to 21-36 overall and 1-22 in Pac-10 play.
Junior left-hander Brett Bordes (Mesa, Ariz.) earned the win out of the bullpen to improve to 5-5 on the season. Pitching in his sixth straight game, Bordes did not allow a run and struck out one in 1.1 innings. Junior starter Erik Averill (Orange, Calif.) did not factor into the decision, giving up four runs (three earned) and seven hits in four and a third innings. He left the game with the score tied 3-3.
Cougar starter Wayne Daman Jr. was saddled with the loss giving up nine runs (three earned) and seven hits in five and two-thirds innings. The sophomore right-hander struck out two and walked four in 5.2 innings. Left-handed reliever Travis Webb, who played last season for the Sun Devils, was roughed up for four runs and three hits while not recording an out in the 10-run sixth.
ASU out-hit the Cougars 14-12 and had four players record multi-hit performances. Junior third baseman Travis Buck (Richland, Wash.) went 2-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored. Sophomore right fielder Colin Curtis (2-for-3, 3 R, RBI) and sophomore second baseman Seth Dhaenens (2-for-3, R, 2B, 4 RBI) also added two hits in the win.
Washington State left fielder Jay Miller went 2-for-4 and scored three runs to lead the Cougars at the plate. Freshman first baseman Jim Murphy added two hits and a team-high three RBI and designated hitter Zach Franklin was 2-for-4 with one RBI.
The Cougars jumped out to the early lead for the second straight night with a single tally in the top of the third inning. Jay Miller singled to lead off the inning and then moved to second on a throwing error by first baseman Zechry Zinicola (San Bernadino, Calif.). Miller scored on a two-out single to center field Murphy.
The Devils took the lead in the bottom of the fourth on a bases loaded double by senior catcher Tuffy Gosewisch (Scottsdale, Ariz.). ASU loaded the bases on consecutive walks to Buck, Curtis and freshman designated hitter Willy Fox (Scottsdale, Ariz.), before Gosewisch drilled the first pitch he saw to the left field gap to stake the Devils to a 3-1 lead.
WSU answered with a three-run inning of its own in top of the fifth to retake the lead at 4-3. After consecutive singles by Jay Miller and catcher Brady Everett, third baseman Zach McAngus lined a triple that eluded a diving Curtis in right field to score both runners and tie the game at 3-3. Designated hitter Zach Franklin greeted reliever Pat Bresnehan with a single to center field to score McAngus with the go-ahead run.
A two-out, two-run single up the middle by Murphy in the top of the sixth inning extended WSU's lead to 6-3.
ASU sent 15 batters to the plate and recorded eight hits in the 10-run sixth inning. Dhaenens had a two-run double to start the rally and also added a two-run single in the frame. After shortstop Andrew Romine (Lake Forest, Calif.) tied the game on a single off the pitcher, Larish hit a towering fly ball down the left field line that caught the jet stream and fell for a three-run double.
Larish plated three more runs in the seventh with a tape-measure home run onto Rural Road over the right field fence.
The Sun Devils and Cougars complete the regular season Sunday at 1 p.m. at Packard Stadium.
