SEATTLE, Wash. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- University of Washington sophomore right-handed pitcher Tim Lincecum struck out 13 in a complete-game effort to lead the Huskies to a 6-4 victory over No. 17 Arizona State Friday night in Pac-10 baseball action at Husky Ballpark.
The Sun Devils dropped their sixth in the last eight games to fall to 30-21 overall and remain in fourth place in the conference at 11-8. Washington, who was ranked No. 8 in the nation head into the season, won its second straight to improve to 29-21 overall and 8-11 in Pac-10 play.
Lincecum, a prep rival of ASU's sophomore left fielder Colin Curtis, scattered seven hits and allowed four runs in the complete-game effort to improve to 7-6. He fanned 13 and walked seven on 165 pitches.
ASU junior starting pitcher Erik Averill (Orange, Calif.) cruised through the first two innings, but was roughed up for five hits and four runs while not making it out of the third inning. Averill struck out two and walked one in two-plus innings to fall to 8-4 on the season. Senior right-hander Ty Marotz (Crystal Lake, Ill.) and junior lefty Brett Bordes (Mesa, Ariz.) combined to hold the Huskies scoreless over the final four innings. Bordes struck out four and did not allow a hit in 2.2 innings.
Senior Jeff Larish (Tempe, Ariz.) made his first career start in right field and went 2-for-3 with a RBI and a walk at the plate. Curtis (Issaquah, Wash.) went 2-for-4 and scored a run. Sophomore first baseman Zechry Zinicola (San Bernadino, Calif.) went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run, but struck out in his final three at-bats.
The Huskies out-hit the Sun Devils 13-7 and were led by three this each from left fielder Zach Clem, right fielder Matt Hague and third baseman Nick Batkoski.
After Lincecum struck out the side in the first (all looking), the Sun Devils got to the hard-throwing right-hander in the second to take the early lead. After a leadoff single to left field by Larish, Zinicola drilled a second-pitch fastball over the left field fence for a two-run home run.
The Huskies got to Averill in the third inning and tapped into the Sun Devil bullpen by sending 10 batters to the plate in the four-run inning. After a leadoff walk to second baseman Mike Rundle, UW recorded six straight hits to take the 4-2 lead. Left fielder Zach Clem drilled a two-run single to left field and shortstop Brent Lillibridge and third baseman Nick Batkoski each had run-scoring singles.
UW added to its lead with two more runs off Bresnehan in the bottom of the fourth inning. With two outs, right fielder Matt Hague doubled down the right field line to score Clem from second base. Batoski followed with hits third hit of the game to drive in Clem and extend the lead to 6-2.
The Sun Devils got back in the game with a run in the fifth on a single by Larish and climbed to within two runs at 6-4 on a two-out, bases loaded walk to pinch-hitter Rocky Laguna (Yuma, Ariz.) in the seventh. Sophomore second baseman Seth Dhaenens (Chandler, Ariz.) struck out with the bases loaded to leave the tying run in scoring position.
The Sun Devils and Huskies continue the three-game Pac-10 series Saturday at 1 p.m. at Husky Ballpark.
Game Notes: The Sun Devils left nine runners on base, including the bases loaded twice... ASU has now played 29 of its 51 games against teams that have been ranked at some point this season... Colin Curtis went 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to five games... Zechry Zinicola hit ASU's first home run since the Utah Valley State game... Zinicola hit his second homer of the year and fifth of his career... Jeff Larish extended his hitting streak to three games... freshman shortstop Andrew Romine singled in his final at-bat to extend his hitting streak to seven games... junior Travis Buck went 0-3 with a run scored and had his season-high 14-game hitting streak snapped... senior catcher Tuffy Gosewisch, a semi-finalist for the Johnny Bench Catcher of the Year Award, recorded his first passed ball of the season.
