TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 8-ranked Arizona baseball team won its Pac-10 series against rival Arizona State with an 18-1 victory over the No. 21-ranked Sun Devils at Packard Stadium on Monday.
The win improved the Wildcats to 34-16 overall and 14-4 in the Pac-10. The 14 conference wins mark the most for an Arizona team since the Pac-10 North and South Divisions merged in 1999. Arizona State fell to 30-20 overall and 11-7 in the conference with the loss.
Arizona rapped out 17 hits in the contest - including seven doubles and a triple - as eight of nine starters finished with at least one hit in the game.
Leading 3-0, the Wildcats broke the game open with six runs off of three different ASU pitchers in the fourth. Arizona posted six hits in the frame, five of which went for doubles.
Junior Nick Hundley opened the inning with his 21st two-bagger of the season and came around to score on a fly ball by Chris Frey that Sun Devil center fielder J.J. Sferra lost in the lights for a double.
A wild pitch by ASU starter Brett Bordes (3-5) advanced Frey to third and ended the game for the Sun Devil left-hander. Bordes was charged with the loss after surrendering five runs - four earned - on four hits in three innings of work.
Inheriting a 1-2 count to Jason Donald, ASU reliever Tony Barnette walked the sophomore shortstop to place runners on first and third for pinch hitter Derek Decater.
The Wildcat left-hander came through with the third double of the frame to plate Frey from third and Donald all the way from first to make it 6-0.
Freshman Bryan Kervin plated Decater with the fourth double of the inning before Trevor Crowe and Brad Boyer recorded the first two outs in the inning. A single by Jeff Van Houten and Jordan Brown's second double of the game capped off the inning with Arizona leading 9-0.
Arizona, tacked on four runs on four hits in the sixth and five more in the seventh for the final 18-1 advantage.
Notes
In Rierson's last start at Arizona State in 2003, the right-hander lasted just a third of an inning after giving up 10 runs on seven hits ... Junior Jordan Brown tied the school record for doubles in a game with three.
Including Brown, the feat has been accomplished 26 times in school history and last by classmate Brad Boyer in 2003 ... Trevor Crowe moved into a tie for fifth with Robbie Moen and Tommy Hinzo on Arizona's single season multi-hit list at 31 after finishing Monday's contest 2 for 5.
