BERKELEY, Calif. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- University of California starting pitcher Adam Gold gave up three runs while working into the eighth inning to lead the Golden Bears to a 7-3 victory over No. 24 Arizona State to salvage the second game of a Pac-10 doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Evans Diamond.

The loss snapped Arizona State's season-high six-game win streak, falling to 22-14 overall and 3-2 in league play. California snapped a four-game conference losing streak to improve to 22-13 overall and 4-4 in Pac-10 play. The two teams will square off in the rubber-match of the three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond.

ASU starting pitcher Pat Bresnehan (Sherborn, Mass.) was saddled with the loss giving up six runs (five earned) in 5.2 innings to fall to 3-3 on the year. The sophomore right-hander gave up a career-high 10 hits, walked three and struck out three. Junior right-hander Kevin Dryanski (Phoenix, Ariz.) closed out the loss giving up three hits and one run in 2.1 solid innings.

Gold settled into a nice groove and limited the Sun Devils to eight hits in 7.1 innings to pick up the win. Gold struck four and walked two to improve to 5-3 on the season. Matt Swanson sealed the win giving up two hits in 1.2 scoreless frames.

Sophomore left fielder Colin Curtis (Issaquah, Wash.) led the Sun Devils at the plate going 3-for-4. Senior first baseman Jeff Larish (Tempe, Ariz.) hit a pair of doubles while going 2-for-3 with one run scored. Sophomore second baseman Seth Dhaenens (Chandler, Ariz.) continued his hot hitting by going 2-for-4 with one RBI to extend his hitting streak to five games. Leadoff hitter Rocky Laguna (Yuma, Ariz.) notched his sixth straight multi-hit game by going 2-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to eight games.

The Golden Bears started fast scoring in each of the first three innings and out-hit the Sun Devils 15-10. Right fielder Chris Errecart led Cal at the plate going 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBI. Third baseman Chris Einspahr (2-for-4), center fielder Brennan Boesch (3-for-4), left fielder Craig Allen (2-for-4) and designated hitter James Holder (3-for-4) all added multi-hit games.

Cal took the early 3-0 lead by scoring a single run in each of the first three innings. Errecart put Cal on the board first with a two-out, solo home run to left field in the bottom of the first inning. Two-out run-scoring singles by Einspahr in the second and Holder in the third extended Cal's lead.

The Sun Devils tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the second on a run-scoring single to right field by Dhaenens. ASU put the go-ahead run on third base with only one out, but Gold got shortstop Joe Persichina (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) to ground into an inning-ending 3-6-3 double play.

Trailing 3-1, ASU again pulled to within one run with a single tally in the top of the fifth. J.J. Sferra (Phoenix, Ariz.) started the two-out rally with a single up the middle and scored all the way from first base on a double to center field by Laguna.

Cal reestablished a two-run lead with an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth. Boesch led off with a single to right field and moved to second base on a groundout. With two outs, he stole third base and then scored on a throwing error by ASU senior catcher Tuffy Gosewisch.

The Golden Bears added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 6-2 lead. After Bresnehan got two quick outs, the Bears rattled off four straight singles. Errecart and Boesch greeted relievers Seth Garrison (Coppell, Texas) and Brett Bordes (Mesa, Ariz.) with run-scoring singles.

Craig homered off Dryanski to lead off the bottom of the seventh to complete Cal's scoring. ASU added its last run in the top of the eighth on a double to center field by Larish to score Gosewisch from first base.

Game Notes: Sophomore Seth Dhaenens continued his hot hitting going 2-for-4 with one RBI to extend his hitting streak to five games... Dhaenens is 19-for-40 (.475) over his last 14 games and leads the team in hitting at .370... senior catcher Tuffy Gosewisch made his first error of the season... Rocky Laguna (8 games), J.J. Sferra (7 games) and Seth Dhaenens (5 games) extended their hitting streaks... for the first time in 11 games this season, ASU lost when Rocky Laguna hit in the leadoff spot.
