TEMPE, Ariz. - Needing a victory to continue its season, the No. 19 Arizona State University water polo team picked up a 6-5 decision over Pacific in the elimination game Friday morning at the 2005 MPSF Championships being conducted at the Spieker Aquatic Complex in Berkeley, Calif. The Sun Devils, seeded 12th in the tournament, pushed their record to 10-20 on the season while the Tigers, the event's 13th seed, finished its season at 11-21 and will take 13th place in the tournament.

ASU got off to a fast start again as it notched a 2-0 lead following one period of play. In both the second and third quarters, each team collected two goals apiece to send the game into the final stanza with the Sun Devils leading, 6-4. In the final quarter of play, UOP tallied one goal to cut the ASU lead to 6-5, but the Sun Devils prevented any further scoring to pick up the victory.

On offense, freshman Katy Lawlor (El Segundo, Calif.) led the charge as she scored a pair of goals while teammates Katie Hedley (So., Lake Forest, Calif.), Adriane Mota (Jr., Long Beach, Calif.), Raelyn Ritchie (So., Newport Beach, Calif.) and Kimberlee Stevens (Jr., Lodi, Calif.) each added solo scores. For the Tigers, national goal leader Jessica Schroeder added two scores, as did Laura Besmer, with Kellie Fletcher adding one.

Defensively, freshman goalie Caylinn Wallace (Laguna Hills, Calif.) recorded nine saves in the victory for the Sun Devils while her Tiger counterpart, Jocelyn Gray, made six stops in the loss.

The Sun Devils return to the pool Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. as they are set to face eighth-seeded UC Irvine. From there, the winner of the Sun Devil-Anteater contest will battle for ninth place Sunday morning at 9:45 a.m. against the winner of the No. 7 seed UC Santa Barbara vs. No. 10 seed San Jose State game. The losers of the two games will meet Sunday morning to play for 11th place.
