TEMPE, Ariz. - The regular season slate of contests for the No. 17 Arizona State University water polo team came to close Sunday afternoon as the Sun Devils fell, 11-5, to No. 14 San Diego State at the Kroc Community Center in San Diego, Calif. The loss dropped the Sun Devils to 9-19 overall and 3-9 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) while the host Aztecs improved to 14-16 on the year with a matching 3-9 MPSF record.

The hosts jumped out to a big first quarter lead as they scored four goals for a 4-0 lead. In the second, the Sun Devil offense came to life as ASU tallied all five of its scores in the stanza while the Aztecs added another trio of goals for a 7-5 halftime lead. Raelyn Ritchie (So., Huntington Beach, Calif.) led the way with her first hat trick of the season while Katie Hedley (So., Lake Forest, Calif.) and Tessa Wyborny (Jr., Walnut Creek, Calif.) each added solo scores. For Hedley, the goal marked the sixth game in a row that she tallied at least one score while adding to her team-leading total of 37 on the season.

Following the intermission, the Sun Devils could not find a way to get a shot past the SDSU defense while the Aztecs added one goal in the third and three more in the fourth. Overall, Rachel Serna recorded a game-high four goals for SDSU while Elana Cervantes netted three and Monica DeRosier posted two.

ASU travels to the MPSF Championships next week with games starting on Thursday in Berkeley, Calif., and concluding on Sunday. Pairings and game times will be determined earlier in the week.
