TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 16 Arizona State University water polo team opened play at the Long Beach Invitational Saturday and dropped its opening contest, 5-3, to No. 11 UC Irvine. The Sun Devils (7-15, 3-7 MPSF) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead before the Anteaters scored five unanswered over the final three periods to record the win.

In the first quarter of play, the ASU offense was clicking as Kimberlee Stevens (Jr., Lodi, Calif.) tallied two scores and Raelyn Ritchie (So., Newport Beach, Calif.) added a goal to claim the early 3-0 lead. From there, UCI recorded one goal each in the second and third quarters of play before knotting the game at three to start the fourth. From there, the Anteater defense continued to prevent ASU from scoring while its offense added two more for the victory.

Caylinn Wallace (Fr., Laguna Hills, Calif.) played all four quarters of the game in the cage and tallied 12 saves in the loss. Her UCI counterpart, Lauren Machanis, tallied 11 in the win.

ASU returns to action Sunday morning as they are set to face No. 18 Hartwick at 8:00 a.m. and No. 20 Cal Baptist at 12:40 p.m. to conclude its stay in the Long Beach Invite. Next weekend, the Sun Devils will play their three final regular season games as they travel to face No. 17 Cal State Northridge, No. 19 UC San Diego and No. 13 San Diego State.
