TEMPE, Ariz. - The 26th Sun Angel Track Classic presented by Coca-Cola was held Saturday at Sun Angel Stadium in Tempe with numerous fast times and quality marks were turned in by members of the Arizona State University track and field teams. Overall, the Sun Devil women placed among the Top 3 on 20 occasions while the men accomplished that feat 13 times and both combined to record 37 marks that gained entrance into the NCAA regional meet.
On the women's side, Anna Masinelli (3,000m steeplechase), the 4x100m relay of Porchea Carroll, Cassandra Reed, Kandace Tucker and Christina Hardeman, Reed in the 400m dash and Amy Hastings in 1,500m run each claimed victory in their respective events while Aaron Aguayo recorded the lone Sun Devil victory for the men as he brought home the title in the men's 1,500m run.
Nine marks recorded by Sun Devils also made the Top 10 all-time list for the program with five of the marks coming from the women. The 4x100m relay clocked a 44.05 to put the women into No. 2 all-time while a member of that relay (Carroll) moved into a tie for fourth at 11.44 in the 100m dash. Rachel Ellison overtook the No. 7 spot in the 1,500m run (4:23.41) while Julia Pedersen bettered her shot put mark to 16.52m (54-02.50) to move into fourth. Angela Tavlarides, who has broken her own school record four times, did it again Saturday as she became the first Sun Devil to crack the 4-meter mark, clearing 4.00m (13-01.50).
The men saw Peterson turn in the eighth-fastest 400m dash time at 45.15 while Aguayo took over the No. 6 spot in the 1,500m run (3:44.04). In the field, Brandon Glenn cleared 5.20m (17-00.75) to become the seventh Sun Devil to break the 17-foot barrier and move into a tie for fifth all-time. He was joined in the field by Andrew Smith who enters the lists at No. 10 following a 63.56m (208-6) throw in the javelin.
Also during the meet, three stadium records were set by visiting athletes with two being set on the track by current collegiate runners and members of Team USA at the 2004 Olympics. Monique Henderson (UCLA), a member of the Gold Medal 4x400m relay team in Athens, won the 200m dash in 22.96, surpassing the mark of 23.02. Bennie Brazell, a finalist in the 400m hurdles, captured the win in his signature event as he won the 400m hurdles in 48.54, besting the mark of 48.57 set in 1986. The final venue record was April Steiner in the women's pole vault, who cleared 4.28m.
Members of the team return to action next weekend as ASU will send athletes to both the Oregon Invitational and the UC San Diego Invitational Saturday.
