TEMPE, Ariz. - After two tough losses to national Top 12 teams, the No. 16 Arizona State University water polo team rebounded in its second game of the day at the Long Beach Invitational as the team handed Santa Clara a 6-3 defeat. The Sun Devils improved to 8-15 overall on the season (3-7 MPSF) while the Broncos slipped to 15-14 overall on the year.
For the second game in a row, the Sun Devils opened the game with an early lead as they scored solo goals in bot the first and second stanzas before SCU tied the game at 2-2 with a pair of goals in the second quarter. The Broncos then took a 3-2 lead to open the third period of play before the Sun Devils tallied four unanswered goals, two each in the third and fourth quarters.
Offensively, Katie Hedley (So., Lake Forest, Calif.) collected her fourth hat trick of the season and the seventh of her career while Ashley Bower (So., Bondi Beach, Australia) added a pair of scores. Kimberlee Stevens (Jr., Lodi, Calif.) rounded out the scoring with a goal of her own. For the season, Bower remains in the team lead with 32 goals scored while Hedley's hat trick brought her closer to the 30-goal mark, giving her 29 on the season. Defensively, Caylinn Wallace (Fr., Laguna Hills, Calif.) recorded another double-digit save total, this time stopping 13 Bronco shots.
ASU returns to action Sunday morning as they are set to face No. 18 Hartwick at 8:00 a.m. and No. 20 Cal Baptist at 12:40 p.m. to conclude its stay in the Long Beach Invite. Next weekend, the Sun Devils will play their three final regular season games as they travel to face No. 17 Cal State Northridge, No. 19 UC San Diego and No. 13 San Diego State.
