TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 17 Arizona State University water polo team opened a three-game road trip Saturday morning with its first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) game of the season and fell to No. 6 California, 10-2, at the Spieker Aquatic Center in Berkeley, Calif. The Sun Devils (4-6, 0-1 MPSF) hung with the Golden Bears (9-4, 1-1 MPSF) through three quarters, but four unanswered scores in the fourth quarter put away the visitors.

In the first quarter, the hosts took a 1-0 lead with less than two minutes remaining before Ashley Bower (So., Bondi Beach, Australia) recorded her team-leading 16th goal on the season to tie the game at one with 55 seconds remaining. The Golden Bears struck back 20 seconds later, however, to reclaim a lead that they would not relinquish. Cal added two more scores in the second quarter to take a 4-1 lead into the intermission.

Cal, which scored three goals in a row to close out the first half, added another pair to stake the hosts to a 6-1 lead with the third quarter winding down. But, with 15 seconds remaining in the period, Katy Lawlor (Fr., El Segundo, Calif.) found the back of the net for her second tally of the season to bring the deficit to four goals. In the fourth stanza, however, the Golden Bears would record four more scores to bring the final to 10-2. Freshman goalie Caylinn Wallace (Fr., Laguna Hills, Calif.) got the start in the cage and recorded 11 saves in the game.

ASU closes out its weekend on the road Sunday at noon when it travels to Stockton, Calif., for a conference game with Pacific.
