LOS ANGELES, Calif. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- Behind a complete game from sophomore starting pitcher Pat Bresnehan and a career-high five hits from senior catcher Tuffy Gosewisch, the Arizona State Sun Devils earned their first Pac-10 victory of the season with a 17-1 thumping of the No. 21 University of Southern California Trojans Friday night at Dedeaux Field.
With the victory the Sun Devils improve to 17-13 overall and 1-1 in Pac-10 play. The Trojans had their season-high five-game winning come to an end to fall to 14-7 overall and 1-1 in league play. The two teams will square off in the rubber match of the series at 1 p.m. Saturday at Dedeaux Field.
Leading 2-1, ASU broke the game open with a nine-run fourth frame by sending 14 batters the plate. Sophomore second baseman Seth Dhaenens (Chandler, Ariz.) recorded two of the Devils' eight hits in the inning and sophomore Colin Curtis (Issaquah, Wash.) hit a two-run home run. Gosewisch also contributed a two-run triple down the right field line.
The big inning gave Bresnehan (Sherborn, Mass.) a comfortable lead as he cruised to his first career victory as a starting pitcher. The sophomore right-hander struck out five and allowed only one unearned run and four hits (all singles). The complete game effort was the fourth by the Sun Devil pitching staff this season.
Gosewisch (Scottsdale, Ariz.) led six different Sun Devils who recorded multi-hit games by going 5-for-6 with four runs and four RBI. He fell just a home run short of hitting for the cycle with singles in the first, third and fifth innings, a two-run triple in the fourth and a two-run double in the eighth. Senior first baseman Jeff Larish (Tempe, Ariz.) went 2-for-7 with his Pac-10 leading two-run home run and Curtis went 3-for-6 with three RBI and hit his first homer of the season. Dhaenens (3-for-4, 2 R, 2 RBI), freshman center fielder J.J. Sferra (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and freshman shortstop Andrew Romine (2-for-4, R) also recorded multi-hit games.
USC starting pitcher Brett Bannister was roughed up for seven hits and eight runs (five earned) in three innings to take the loss and fall to 4-2 on the season. Junior All-American catcher Jeff Clement recorded two of USC's four hits.
