BATON ROUGE, La. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- Led by six hits from junior Travis Buck and a pair of home runs from senior Jeff Larish, the Arizona Stats Sun Devils set a school record with 35 hits in a 30-13 victory over Western Illinois Sunday afternoon at Alex Box Stadium.
The Sun Devils improved to 13-11 overall with their second straight win over the Leathernecks. ASU has now won seven of their last nine games. Western Illinois falls to 4-13 with their 10th straight loss.
In addition to setting the school record for hits in a game (35), the Sun Devils also set school records for total bases (57), most runs in an inning (15 in the 9th), hits in an inning (16 in the ninth) and tied for fourth in runs scored.
Junior Travis Buck went 6-for-8 with three RBI and senior Jeff Larish belted two home runs for the second consecutive game and went 4-for-6 while tying a school record with six runs scored. Rocky Laguna (3-for-4), Colin Curtis (2-for-8), Austin Stockfisch (2-for-2), Willy Fox (3-for-5, HR, 5 R, 3 RBI), Seth Dhaenens (3-for-5, 4 R, HR, 6 RBI) and Andrew Romine (5-for-5, 4 RBI) also contributed multi-hit performances in the record-breaking offensive contest.
With his third multi-homer game of the year, Larish now has nine home runs in 2005 and 37 in his career to rank eighth in ASU history. Fox also added his fourth home run of the season and Tuffy Gosewisch blasted his third of the year with a two-run shot to left field in the first inning. Redshirt sophomore Seth Dhaenens hit his first career home run while going 3-for-5 with six RBI.
Freshman left-hander Josh Satow earned the win in his collegiate debut allowing nine hits and nine runs (six earned) in 5.0 innings out of the bullpen. Junior starter Tony Barnette didn't last past the second inning giving up four runs on seven hits in just 1.2 innings.
Game Notes: Travis Buck extended his hitting streak to nine games... his six hits are tied for second in single-game school history... Jeff Larish has hit eight of his nine home runs spread across four days this season... he has three multi-home run games and had a home run in each half of a doubleheader against South Alabama and Oklahoma... Rocky Laguna extended his hitting streak to four games and is 8-for-12 on the weekend... Andrew Romine went 5-for-5 with a career high four RBI to extend his hitting streak to four games... Josh Satow became the 16th newcomer and 10th true freshman to see action for the Sun Devils this season... the bullpen had its consecutive innings scoreless streak snapped at 21.0 innings... freshman Willy Fox hit his fourth home run of the season, with all four going to the opposite field... freshman reserve catcher Austin Stockfisch has hits in his last four at-bats and is 4-for-5 this season.
