TEMPE, Ariz. - Only one event at the 2005 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships involved members of the Arizona State University program on the final day of the event Saturday in Fayetteville, Ark., and the outcome of that race inside the Randal Tyson Indoor Facility was certainly not what the Sun Devils expected. Regardless, the men finished tied for 13th place with 15 points to record their second Top 15 finish in as many years and just the fourth in program history while the women placed tied for 43rd with four points. Arkansas' men (56) and Tennessee's women (46) won the respective team titles.
In the men's 4x400m relay, the Sun Devil quartet of Domenik Peterson, Seth Amoo, Lewis Banda and Jason Barton entered the meet ranked third in the nation and were placed in the fastest of four heats Saturday. Although the time was not listed in results, the Sun Devils clocked in at 3:03.92 and would have finished as the national runners-up, but instead were disqualified. The rule that disqualified ASU, Rule 5-5-2b, states that a runner on a banked track and cannot "step on or over the lane line to the left with two consecutive steps of the left foot." It was not released as to which student-athlete was flagged for the infraction.
Overall, the Sun Devils finished the weekend with Trevell Quinley (second in the long jump), Peterson (fourth in the 200m dash), Brandon Glenn (seventh in the pole vault) and Amy Hastings (fifth in the 5,000m run) each attaining All-America status for their performances.
Next up for the track and field program will be its second of five home outdoor meets during the 2005 season as the Sun Devils play host to the Baldy Castillo Invitational Friday and Saturday, March 18-19. Several field events and a Distance Carnival will take place Friday while the remaining track and field events will be contested Saturday. More the 12 schools from around the nation will be on hand to compete at Sun Angel Stadium.
