TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 16 Arizona State University water polo team finished in ninth place at the 2005 UC San Diego Arena Invitational Sunday following a 6-3 setback at the hands of No. 12 Michigan at the Canyonview Pool in La Jolla, Calif. The Sun Devils (1-3, 0-0 MPSF) dropped its second game on the day as the Wolverines (6-3) built a five-goal lead that ASU could not rebound from.
The Wolverines jumped out to an early 2-0 lead before the Sun Devils responded in the second quarter as Raelyn Ritchie (So., Newport Beach, Calif.) found the back of the net to cut the lead to 2-1. UM would go on to add one more goal before the half and then pushed across three in the third to take the lead, 6-1, with one quarter remaining.
In the final stanza, Holly Newman (Jr., San Diego, Calif.) and Sharleanna Richardson (Fr., Simi Valley, Calif.) each recorded scores, but it was not enough as ASU lost, 6-3. The goal for Richardson was the first of her collegiate career.
Following a week off from competition, the Sun Devils will return to the pool for the UC Santa Barbara Invitational Feb. 26-27 in Santa Barbara, Calif.
