TEMPE, Ariz. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- An eight-run fifth inning by Oregon State and five errors cost the No. 9 Arizona State Sun Devils proved costly in a 12-6 non-conference loss to the Beavers Sunday afternoon at Packard Stadium in the fourth day of the Bob Schaefer Memorial Baseball Tournament.
Despite committing four errors in the first three innings, the Sun Devils still held a 5-2 lead. After a single tally in the fourth, OSU sent 11 batters to the plate and hit five doubles in the eight-run fifth to put the game out of reach.
With the loss, Arizona State falls to 3-3 overall and had their two-game win streak snapped. Oregon State improves to 3-1 overall and recorded only its second win over the Sun Devils in the last 12 meetings.
ASU junior starting pitcher Brett Bordes (Mesa, Ariz.) was again had some tough luck with all five errors coming behind him. The southpaw gave up six hits and six runs (four earned) in 4.1 innings to fall to 0-2 on the year. Junior reliever Tony Barnette (Federal Way, Wash.) took the brunt of the eight-run fifth by giving up five runs on five hits in one-third of an inning. Sophomore right-hander Pat Bresnehan (Sherborn, Mass.) was dominant out of the bullpen striking out seven and giving up only four hits and one run over the final 4.1 innings.
OSU sophomore reliever Kevin Gunderson stymied the Devils with eight strikeouts and allowed only three hits in 6.1 innings to pick up his first win of the season. Starter Anton Maxwell was roughed up for five runs and five hits in 2.2 innings, but the Beavers big inning earned him the no-decision.
Leadoff hitter Colin Curtis (Issaquah, Wash.) was the only Sun Devil to record a multi-hit game, going 2-for-5 with one RBI to extend his hitting streak to seven games dating back to the end of the 2004 season. Senior catcher Tuffy Gosewisch (Scottsdale, Ariz.) went 1-for-4 with ASU's first home run of the season. Freshman shortstop Andrew Romine (Lake Forest, Calif.) went 1-for-2 to extend his hitting streak to five games.
Four players recorded multi-hit games to lead the Beavers 15-hit attack. Preseason All-American center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury was 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Designated hitter Mike Lissman added a double and a triple and two RBI.
After the Beavers scored two unearned runs in the top of the second inning, the Devils came right back with a four-run bottom half of the inning. Gosewisch blasted a two-run home run to tie the game and a pair of two-out hits by Curtis and freshman center fielder J.J. Sferra (Phoenix, Ariz.) gave the Sun Devils a 4-2 lead.
After a run in the third to extend ASU's lead to 5-2, the Beavers started on the comeback trail. Right fielder Danny Anderson blasted a solo home run in the fourth inning and then the floodgates opened in the fifth. Behind four consecutive doubles from Ellsbury, Lissman, Andy Jenkins and Shea McFeely, the Beavers went on to send 11 batters to the plate and recorded eight hits in the frame.
The Sun Devils conclude tournament action Monday night against New Mexico State (1-3) at 6 p.m. at Packard Stadium. Senior right-hander Ty Marotz (0-0, 3.38 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Sun Devils.
