TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - Richard Midgley scored an off-balance layup with 2.8 seconds left to lift California over Arizona State 84-82 Saturday night.
Arizona State (16-7, 5-6 Pac-10) called a time-out with 2.2 seconds left and then Midgley knocked the in-bounds pass out of bounds with 1.4 seconds remaining. Bryson Krueger threw a pass on the ensuing in-bounds play to Ike Diogu, who missed a 12-footer on the baseline as time expired.
Diogu, who had 35 points and seven rebounds, had tied the game at 82 with a layup with 26.6 seconds left.
The lead changed hands three times after Rod Benson made one of two free throws to give the Golden Bears (12-9, 5-6 Pac-10) a 70-69 advantage with about five minutes left.
Benson led five Bears in double figures with 20 points and had eight rebounds. Midgley added 15 points.
Dominic McGuire, Martin Smith and Marquise Kately all scored 10 points for California.
Serge Angounou hit his third 3-pointer of the season with 57.7 seconds left to give Arizona State an 80-79 lead but David Paris answered with a driving layup and subsequent free throw for California.
Kevin Kruger scored 15 points for Arizona State.
Angounou added 15 points and had been 2-of-9 from outside the arc in 22 games this season.
Diogu scored a career-high 39 points in Thursday's win over Stanford.
