TEMPE, Ariz. - Track and field bragging rights remained with Arizona State University Saturday as the No. 11 men and No. 11 women opened the 2005 indoor season with sound defeats of intrastate rivals Arizona and Northern Arizona at the annual meet held at the JL Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff, Ariz. The ASU women, on the strength of 12 individual wins, defeated Arizona, 134-77.5, and Northern Arizona, 134-81.5, while the men downed the Wildcats, 132-100, and the host Lumberjacks, 132-57.

Overall, ASU's squads combined to win 19 events (12 by the women and seven by the men) while also combining to see 48 Top 3 finishes (22 by the women and 26 by the men). These finishes allowed the men and women to sweep the dual for the third year in a row.

Porchea Carroll led the charge for the women as she won three events, two on the track and one in the field. Carroll opened with a 7.35 to take the 60m dash before winning the 200m event in 23.65. Both times provisionally qualify her for the NCAA Championships and her 60m dash mark ties for the school record with Dawnyell Linder, who clocked her time in 1999. In the field, she claimed the victory in the long jump with a mark of 6.03m (19-09.50).

Three other Sun Devil women turned in performances that earned provisional marks. On the track, Kandace Tucker made the list in the 200m dash at 23.82 while throwers Julia Pedersen (16.10m/52-10.00) and Jennifer Kowacz (15.48m/50-09.50) made the list in the 200m dash following first and second place finishes, respectively, in the event.

Along with Carroll's three victories and Pedersen's gold in the field, eight other victories were accumulated by the women. On the track, Christina Hardeman captured the 400m dash in 55.33, Amy Hastings took the mile run in 5:08.52, Jessie McLaughlin won the 800m run in 2:14.34 and both the 4x400m and distance medley relay captured wins in times of 3:50.26 and 12:24.88, respectively. In the field, freshman Alana Waterford won the high jump (1.65m/5-5.00), Angela Tavlarides captured the pole vault (3.81m/12-6.00) and Kowacz won the weight throw (17.47m/57-3.75). For Tavlarides, her mark is a school record, bettering her own record of 3.66m set last year.

Provisionally for the men, for times on the track and one field event mark earned athletes places on the national lists with one runner missing the provisional standard by 0.01. The men also picked up seven victories, including all three sprint events. Steven Koehnemann took the 60m dash in 6.69, missing the provisional mark by 0.01, before Seth Amoo captured the 200m dash in 21.06. Amoo was joined by Domenik Peterson (second in the 200m at 21.23) made the provisional lists while Jason Barton, an indoor All-American in the 400m dash last year, won the open quarter in 47.09 to also earn a berth on the national lists. The final provisional qualifier is Travis Jones, the winner of the shot put at 17.88m/58-8.00.

Other victorious Sun Devil men included the 4x400m relay team in 3:10.73, Brandon Glenn in the pole vault with a height of 5.05m/16-6.75 and Trevell Quinley in the long jump with a mark of 7.32m/24-0.25. Also in the pole vault, Sean Pierce and Stephen Dolk both cleared 5.05m to tie each other for second while Glenn won the meet based on fewest attempts needed to clear the height.

Overall, the women saw nine of their marks earning a position on the all-time Top 5 lists while the men recorded six.
