Postgame Quotes - #22 Arizona State defeats Oregon State, 27-14

Recap |  Final Stats |  Notes

Arizona State Head Coach Dirk Koetter

On the game being physical:

"That was a very physical game. Everyone thought that we were going to come in and walk over them because they were 1-2. That's a good football team. They took the defending national champs to the wire. Those guys have speed, they're physical, they have good size. The whole game was turnovers. I don't think we turned it over. Bill Swancutt (DE) is a good player and their secondary is outstanding. It was a tough battle and I thought we did what we had to do. It wasn't a work of art but we did had to do."

On the win:

"I'm pleased with the way we answered the bell in all phases. When you get to Pac-10 play they don't hand out the wins. Let's not forget that Oregon State was picked ahead of us in every single poll. I'm not down at all. We're going to come back and we're going to make corrections and we're going to learn things from this game. Our guys fought too. I'm very proud of our defense. They continue to do better and better. Mike Hass is a heck of a player and I thought Josh Golden did a really nice job of covering him."

On OSU QB Derek Anderson:

"I think Derek Anderson is a terrific quarterback. That guy threw some nice balls tonight. That first interception hit the receiver in the hands and bounced right up to us. For every team that plays Oregon State, that's going to be their game plan. He's got some weapons. That was a beautiful throw by Anderson to the tight end and what a play by Manny Franklin. That's a perfect example of why you never quit on a play. That's one of the plays of the year in college football."

On they type of game it was:

"It was a field position game. That's one thing I'm disappointed about is our offense had a couple chances in the second half. They try to get you to play a street fight game where you're trying to guess with them."

Arizona State QB Andrew Walter On the rhythm and flow of this weeks game as compared to last weeks game against Iowa:

"Oregon State made it hard on us as they grabbed a hold of us and I'm not saying aggression, but I felt like Oregon State played really physical and there were sometimes when they got their hands on us. If it were the NFL they would call a flag on, as it was past five yards down the field, but the call is not like it is. They were able to put some pressure on me. I had to release a couple of balls before I wanted, anticipating, hoping we would be on the same page. There were some plays to be made, some catches and definitely some throws that could have been made and would have been big plays."

On not playing your best, but still winning:

"I guess that says how good our defense is and it also says that we are able to fight adversity. A win is a win and it doesn't matter to me how it comes. We are going to keep moving."

On saying something to (Brandon) Browner (Oregon State):

"I said `touchdown' to him. If they played as good as they talked, they would be 4-0. I respect someone who is going to play well on the field and they definitely have some of those players. I do not respect people who talk, use the media for those sort of things. I respect somebody who performs out on the field and makes plays out there."

On the first rushing TD of the year and the opportunity to share the offense

" I knew it was coming. We could have had a few more opportunities in other games. It was just a matter of time and any time somebody else can get a touchdown that is great. I definitely don't want the game to be about me as that is not how our team runs. We have a ton of great players. If they can get some of the action, for sure, give it to them.

On Hakim Hill:

"He ran the ball great. He hit the hole hard everytime he could do that. Good things happen so we look forward to a lot more of him, even though he is playing with one arm. Any time Hakim hits it down hard when he can and when he does, good things happen."

Arizona State CB Emmanuel Franklin

On defense setting the tone:

"We let them score in the first quarter and when we got on the sideline everybody was saying lets see what kind of defense we have right now because our motto is fighting adversity and that is what we tried to do."

On creating fumble in the end zone:

"I shouldn't have been in that position in the first place. I mean I've been watching that route all weekend in film. I've seen it everyday in practice and I acted like I didn't know what was coming. And once he caught it I was like I got to catch up and do something. I didn't realize it was out, but once it was out and I saw Riccardo (Stewart) act like he was playing basketball and keep the ball in and scoop it. It was a big momentum changer."

  Arizona State LB Jamar Williams

On first interception of the game:

"It was tough. I thought I scored, but they said I stepped out. I am going to have to watch it on film and check it out."

On his second interception:

"I give all the credit to the front four. They put a lot of pressure on him [Derek Anderson]. We knew if we got a lot of pressure on him he was going to give it up."

On if it was a let down after the Iowa game:

"Winning in the Pac-10, there is no such thing as a let down. Oregon State is a great team. A win is a win pretty much, especially when you win in the Pac. We have a lot to work on, we felt that we got better this week."

"I watched the whole film once, just to get the attitude I needed to play this game. I was kind of frustrated last year. This year we studied a lot of their film, we noticed a lot of things to take advantage of. We brought a lot of pressure to him, and we turned in our chances."

On OSU being a physical team:

"We really haven't played a Pac-10 team. We have not seen Pac-10 speed. There is a big difference between Big 10 and UTEP. Just to go out there and play the way we did I think is pretty good. If we can hold other teams to 14 in the Pac we will win a lot of games."

Arizona State LB Jordon Hill On the play of the front four:

" It was a battle up there, we had the back end doing their job and we had to keep trying to take the pressure off of them. It was a total defensive game, we came out and bounced back after the early touchdown."

On if Oregon State was the most physical team they had faced:

"I think every team we play is physical, it was a different kind of physical though, I felt like their offensive line was more athletic than some of the other offensive lines we have played. As a whole the speed was a lot different tonight."

  On Derek Anderson:

"He's a great quarterback, we knew that before, but we also knew that if we put pressure on him we can get him out of rhythm. I think we did that well in the second and third quarters and let him get too comfortable back there in the fourth."

Oregon State Head Coach Mike Riley

"There are too many things to point the finger at on what went wrong tonight and I just don't have enough fingers. The first half really told the tale of the game. We had a chance for our second touchdown and we fumbled into the end zone. Then, we absolutely just gave them a touch down when we fumbled again right before the half.It spiraled from there as we just disintegrated and gave them a 14-point swing going into halftime."

On the momentum shift in the second quarter:

"It was a big swing.I don't know exactly what the turning point was because it was kind of hard to tell, but that was definitely where the big swing in the game occurred. On our third series, we went down the field and got a touch down. It wasn't long after that we fumbled and gave the ball right back to them. We played a horrible field position game."

On the OSU penalties and personal fouls:

"Well I think that gave them another touch down for sure. It was part of our play that was absolutely unnecessary. ASU earned this victory. They did what they needed to do, but we gave them at least two of the their scores."

Oregon State CB Brandon Browner

On coming out of the game:

"I cramped up and that's why I came out the game. Physically, I feel fine."

"We made lots of mistakes on offence and defense, but our defense and offense played hard."

On talking in the media prior to the game:

"The comments made during the week were blown out of proportion. Talkingon the field doesn't matter, but there will be no more talkingon my part."

"We are frustrated and not happy at all we just lost the game. We need to refocus and go back to the drawing board. The Sun Devils are a good team and they play hard. The only positive outcome of the game is that we played hard."

  Oregon State TE Joe Newton

On the fumble (in the end zone):

"Ball security is the most important thing. We get that hammered into us at practice every day. It is the most important thing, you need the ball. If you turn the ball over all the time it will hurt you. They [Arizona State] capitalize on stuff like that. That will really hurt you. I thought I had scored, but apparently I wasn't. It was just stupid on my part. I get told to keep the ball high and tight every day. I had relaxed a little bit. That's when you're going to get hurt."

On what happened tonight:

"I don't know if I can put my finger on anything. We made a lot of mistakes. On a lot of errors that we normally wouldn't make, they did a great job of coming back and making plays.
