SUN DEVIL NOTES:
Arizona State lost in the first-round of the NCAA Tournament since a 5-1 loss to Cal State Northridge in 1992 at the Wichita Regional... the 10-run loss was ASU's worst margin of defeat in 182 career postseason games... ASU is now 128-54 all-time in the NCAA Tournament while making its 28th appearance... the 15 runs given up are the fourth most in ASU postseason history... the Devils also lost 21-14 to USC in the 1998 National Championship game, 17-9 to Oklahoma State (1990 Regional, Tempe, Ariz.) and 17-10 to UNLV (1978 Regional, Tempe, Ariz.)... the four errors tied a season high (Gonzaga; 2/16) and marked the first time in 16 games that ASU had made more than one error in a game... the Devils entered the game with a Pac-10 best .974 fielding percentage, tying the school record... ASU let its opponent score in the opening frame for the 24th time this season (46 runs) and are now 12-12 when the opponent scores in the first inning... ASU also scored for the 31st time in the first inning (68 runs), but lost for only the fifth time (26-5)... Pedroia recorded only his 22nd and 23rd career errors in the game in his third multi-error game... the junior All-American went 2-for-4 for his 29th multi-hit game of the season... he now has 296 career hits... Nick Walsh went 1-for-2 with a walk while making his fourth NCAA appearance... Travis Buck went 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBI, marking the 22nd multi-hit game of the season... ASU is now 2-5 all-time at Goodwin Field in NCAA Tournament play.
REGIONAL NOTES:
The four teams in the Fullerton Regional have combined for 12 national championships... ASU leads the four-team regional with five NCAA titles (1965, 67, 69, 77, 81)... Cal State Fullerton has won three titles (1979, 84, 95), Minnesota has also won three (1956, 60, 64) and Pepperdine won the title in 1992.
