TEMPE, Ariz. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- Arizona State left fielder Jeff Larish was 4-for-6 and freshman center fielder Colin Curtis had a career-high five RBI as the No. 14 Sun Devils dominated New Mexico State 19-2 Monday night in non-conference action at Packard Stadium.
ASU pounded out 18 hits with 10 different players recording hits to improve to 31-13 overall and have now won eight of its last 10 games. New Mexico State, fresh off a three-game sweep of Sun Belt conference leader Florida International, had its four-game win streak snapped to fall to 30-16-1.
Junior starting pitcher Jason Urquidez dominated the Aggies giving up two hits and one run in five innings to pick up his ninth victory of the year. Urquidez (9-2) struck out seven, limiting an Aggie team that ranked in the top five in the nation in scoring at 10.0 runs per game. Sophomore left-hander Brett Bordes finished off the victory giving up one run and two hits over the final four innings for his first save of the year.
NMSU junior starting pitcher Eric Pilon (Higley, Ariz.) gave up eight hits and nine runs in an inning and a third to take the loss to fall to 0-1 on the year. Four Aggie relievers combined to give up 10 runs over the final 7.2 innings.
Larish (Tempe) notched four singles to extend his season-high hitting streak to 10 games and raised his season batting average over .300 (.301) for the first time this season. Larish is 18-for-46 over his last 10 games (.391).
Curtis (Issaquah, Wash.) belted his fifth home run of the year with a three-run shot in the second inning and finished 2-for-4 with five RBI. Junior All-American shortstop Dustin Pedroia (Woodland, Calif.) added his 23rd multi-hit game of the year by going 2-for-5 with two runs scored and hit his Pac-10 leading 22nd double of the year. Junior catcher Tuffy Gosewisch (Scottsdale) was 2-for-3 with a double and set a career high with four RBI. Travis Buck (2-for-4, 2 R) and Zechry Zinicola (2-for-4, 2 2B, 4 R, RBI) also contributed multi-hit contests in the victory.
NMSU managed only four hits in the contest after coming in averaging 11 hits per game. Senior All-American first baseman Billy Becher (Tempe/McClintock HS) went 1-for-4 with a run-scoring double.
The Sun Devils and Aggies will complete the two-game series Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at Packard Stadium. Senior right-hander Jeff Mousser (4-3, 3.65 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Sun Devils.
