STANFORD, Calif. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- Stanford left fielder Danny Putnam hit a first-inning grand slam home run and starting pitcher Mark Romanczuk threw seven shutout innings to lead the No. 2 Cardinal to a 5-0 victory over No. 8 Arizona State Friday night in Pac-10 action at Sunken Diamond.
The shutout marked only the second time in the last 555 games and just the third time during the Pat Murphy era (1995-P) that the Devils have not scored a run in a game. ASU had its NCAA record 506-game consecutive games scoring streak snapped earlier this season against Oklahoma (2/15).
Winners of 11 of the last 12 games coming into tonight, ASU drops to 39-15 overall and 12-10 in Pac-10 play. ASU remains tied with Stanford improved to 43-11 overall and clinched at least a share of the Pac-10 title with a 15-7 league mark.
Romanczuk and senior reliever David O'Hagen limited the Devils to only three hits. Romanczuk (11-2) stymied the Devils allowing only two hits and struck out five in seven shutout innings to pick up his 11th win of the season. O'Hagen sealed the win with three strikeouts over the final two frames.
Jeff Mousser (Tempe, Ariz.) had his five-game win streak snapped to fall to 6-4 on the season. The senior right-hander gave up seven hits and five runs in four innings. Freshman right-hander Quentin Andes (Albuquerque, N.M.) was solid out of the bullpen with four scoreless innings.
Stanford got off to a quick start building a 4-0 lead after the first inning. After a leadoff walk to Sam Fuld and a pair of singles by Jonny Ash and Jed Lowrie to load the bases, junior left fielder Danny Putnam drove a grand slam over the left field fence.
The Cardinal added a run with a two-out single by first baseman John Mayberry, Jr., to score Ash from second base.
Sun Devil junior catcher Tuffy Gosewisch (Scottsdale, Ariz.) recorded two of ASU's three hits, going 2-for-4 with his 14th double of the season. Freshman Colin Curtis (Issaquah, Wash.) has the only other Sun Devil hit. Travis Buck (16 games) and Josh Asanovich (12 games) had their respective hitting streaks come to an end.
Ash (2-for-2, 2 R), Putnam (2-for-3, R, 4 RBI) and shortstop Chris Minaker (2-for-4) led the nine-hit Cardinal offensive attack. Stanford left 10 men on base, while ASU left seven men on base.
The Cardinal (43-11, 15-7 Pac-10) and Sun Devils (39-15, 12-10 Pac-10) continue the series Saturday at 1 p.m. at Sunken Diamond. Junior right-hander Jason Urquidez (11-2, 2.90 ERA) will face Stanford sophomore right-hander Jeff Gilmore (8-2, 4.61 ERA).
