TEMPE, Ariz. - The third overall day and first for the Arizona State track and field team came to a close at the 77th running of the Texas Relays Friday night with the Sun Devils advancing four events to the finals while earning four regional berths. The event, being hosted by Texas in Austin, features many of the elite collegiate programs in the nation while also boasting numerous talented high school and professional athletes.

In the individual events, Steven Koehnemann ran another fast 100m dash as he clocked a 10.46 to place first in his heat of competition and rank third overall. Although Koehnemann advanced to the finals slated for Saturday, his teammate, Seth Amoo, was not as fortunate as he finished 16th overall at 10.58 following his third-place heat finish. On the women's side, neither Kandace Tucker nor Porchea Carroll advanced to the finals of the 100m dash after placing 20th and 28th, respectively. Tucker clocked an 11.84 to finish third in her heat while Carroll also took third in her heat at 12.05. The final individual performance of the day saw Trevell Quinley place 13th overall in the long jump with a leap of 7.16m (23-6.00).

In the relays, the women's 4x100m team of Carroll, Cassandra Reed, Jacquelyn Johnson and Tucker won their heat and finished third overall at 45.01. LSU (44.47) leads the pack with Baylor second (44.60). The men's quartet of Koehnemann, Domenik Peterson, Amoo and Lewis Banda also placed first in their heat of the 4x100m relay, but sit second overall with a 39.40. Their time, which qualifies them for the NCAA regional meet, ranks as the 10th-fastest mark in school history. Only LSU's 39.23 was faster on the day.

In the 4x400m relay, the women's team of Christina Hardeman, Tucker, Marcia Smith and Reed earned a berth into the regional meet with a time of 3:39.79 while finishing third in their heat. Unfortunately for the women, their time was the 10th-fastest on the day, leaving them one place from advancing to the finals.

Action at the 2004 Texas Relays comes to a conclusion Saturday with the Sun Devils sending three relays and a trio of individuals to the finals of the meet. The women will send out the 4x100m relay team while the men's 4x200m and 4x400m relays will be represented. Individually, Koehnemann will run in the finals while Brandon Glenn and Stephen Dolk will compete in the pole vault.
