SURPRISE, Ariz. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- ASU starting pitcher Jason Urquidez struck out seven in six scoreless innings and junior shortstop Dustin Pedroia was 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead the No. 7 Sun Devils to a 11-0 victory over Utah in the Coca-Cola Spring Training Classic at Surprise Stadium.
ASU improved to 5-0 with the victory, marking the eighth time in Pat Murphy's 10 years the Devils have started a season 5-0. Utah drops to 0-2 on the year and 5-26 all-time against ASU. ASU has also scored 10 or more runs in four of the five games this year.
Urquidez improved to 2-0 on the year with six masterful innings. Backing up his nine-strikeout win against Florida State last weekend, the junior college transfer fanned seven in six innings and allowed only three hits. In his two appearances this year, Urquidez has two wins and has struck out 16 in 11.0 innings for a 0.82 ERA. Junior Ty Marotz followed with three strikeouts in two scoreless innings and freshman lefty Travis Webb made his ASU debut with a scoreless ninth.
Utah starting pitcher Doug Mackay recorded the loss giving up 10 hits and 11 runs in four and two-third innings. Relievers Ryan Breska and Ben Buck limited the Devils to two hits over the final three and a third innings.
Pedroia extended his hitting streak to five game and has four consecutive multi-hit games after his 3-for-4 performance. He also scored three runs and had two RBI and is now hitting .478 (11-for-23) on the season. Sophomore right fielder Travis Buck was 2-for-2 with three runs scored and also had two walks.
Utah was limited to only five hits in the game, led by two hits from Scottsdale native Michael Westfall (2-for-3). Utah did not have a batter pass second base in the game.
Arizona State concludes tournament action Sunday afternoon with a 3 p.m. game against Oklahoma (1-1) at Surprise Stadium. Utah will face Gonzaga at noon. The Devils will also play a 7 p.m. game Monday night at Packard Stadium against Gonzaga.
