TEMPE, Ariz. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- Arizona State sophomore outside hitter Nicole Morton had 10 kills and three blocks, but it wasn't enough as the No. 14 California Golden Bears defeated the Sun Devils in straight sets (30-20, 30-21, 31-29) to conclude the 2004 season Saturday night at Wells Fargo Arena.

With the victory California improved to 16-11 overall and 11-7 in Pac-10 play. They will wait to see where they will be seeded in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. ASU finished the 2004 campaign with an overall 10-17 record and tied for seventh in the Pac-10 with a 5-13 mark. Both the Pac-10 and overall records are one-game improvements from last season.

Morton (Bonsall, Calif.) was ASU's only player with double-digit in kills, notching her 19th match this season with 10 or more kills. Freshman middle blocker Colette Meek (Sherwood Park, Alberta, Canada) added seven kills and two blocks in the loss.

Freshman defensive specialist Sydney Donahue (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) led ASU with 12 digs and set the ended the season with freshman records for digs (375) and digs per game (4.36). Meek set the freshman record for blocks per game (1.20) and became the first Sun Devil since 1998 to average over 1.00 blocks per game.

Senior libero Stephanie Kohner (Anthem, Ariz.) finished out her career with her third straight match with double-digits in digs, recording 10 in the loss to the Golden Bears Saturday. Kohner finished second on the team with 2.36 dpg in 2004. Senior outside hitter Natalie Harris (Tempe, Ariz.) was also honored before the match as part of the `Senior Night' festivities, but has decided not to apply for a sixth year of eligibility after suffering a career-ending knee injury last Spring.

Outside hitter Angie Pressey led the Golden Bears with 10 kills and 13 digs. Sophomore setter Samantha Carter led all players with 39 assists and added eight digs. Junior libero Alexis Kollias recorded a match-high 16 digs.

The Sun Devils will lose only one active player that saw any action on the court in 2004 (Kohner) and are set to return 12 players for the 2005 season.

Game Notes:

  • Arizona State finished the 2004 season with a 10-17 record overall and tied for seventh place in the Pac-10 with Oregon State with a 5-13 league mark. Both the overall and Pac-10 record are improvements from the 9-18, 4-14 record from last season.

  • With 2.0 blocks tonight, freshman middle blocker Colette Meek (Sherwood Park, Alberta, Canada) finished the season with 1.20 block per game to set the Arizona State freshman record. The old record was 1.09 block per game set by Laura Hibsman in 1996. She also became the first Sun Devil since 1998 (Shawna Vanley, 1.42 bpg) to average over one block per game.

  • Freshman libero Sydney Donahue (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) finished the season with ASU freshman records for single-season digs (375) and digs per game (4.36). She became the first Sun Devil to average over four digs a game since 2000 when current assistant coach Jami Coughlin averaged 4.00 dpg in 2000. With a team-high 12 digs vs. Cal, she recorded her 19th match with double-digits in digs this season.
