TEMPE, Ariz. -- In a wild back and forth game that featured six goals, the Arizona State soccer team (4-6-1; 0-0-1 Pac-10) came away with a 3-3 tie to No. 4 Washington (9-1-1; 0-0-1 Pac-10) in the Pac-10 Conference opener for both schools at the Sun Devil Soccer Stadium.
The Sun Devils look to take an early lead by hitting two straight posts in the opening six minutes of play, but they finally broke through at the 12:02 mark for the 1-0 lead. Brittany Cooper collected a loose ball and spun around two UW defenders then drilled the ball into the top right corner of the goal from 15-yards out on the right wing.
UW then came back to tie the match when Tina Frimpong scored the first of her two goals on the night when she took a thru ball from Nikki Gamble and shot it pass diving ASU keeper Kim Bingham. Just about nine minutes later in the 30th minute, Manya Makoski staked the Devils to a 2-1 lead when she got a hold of the ball from a scramble in front of the goal and shot it pass UW keeper Kelsey Rasmussen, who had just fallen down on the play. ASU then looked to take a 3-1 lead in the 38th minute when Katie Leahy scored, but ASU was called for offsides negating the goal.
But just right before half at the 44th minute, the Huskies tied it once again, this time Gamble collected the loose ball and shot it over Bingham from about 15-yards out.
As the second half began, ASU went ahead for the third time in the 52nd minute. Off of a corner kick, Juanita Lawson gained the loose ball in front and took one shot that Rasmussen deflected back to Lawson, who then took the rebound and put it away for her first career goal as a Sun Devil.
However, UW came back and tied the match for third and final time in the 73rd minute when Frimpong got behind the Devil defense and chipped the ball over Bingham from about 5 yards out.
Each team had chances in both overtime periods, but neither could tally the golden goal. UW posted three shots in the first overtime, while the Devils recorded three shots in the second extra frame.
ASU out shot UW 18-15 overall and posted five corner kicks to UW's four. Bingham made eight saves on the night, while Rasmussen collected two. This was the first time all season that UW allowed more than two goals. ASU is now 43-0-1 when they score three or more goals.
Up next, the Devils will host Washington State on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
