TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State's Manya Makoski's goal in the 55th minute of play carried the Sun Devils (8-8-1; 4-2-1 Pac-10) to a1-0 Pac-10 victory over USC (9-8-1; 3-5-0 Pac-10) Sunday afternoon at the Sun Devil Soccer Stadium. ASU's last three victories have all been by 1-0 shutouts and they have now won four of their last six matches. With two games remaining, the Sun Devils now move into a tie with Stanford for third place in the Pac-10 Conference standings.
Both teams played tight with the majority of the play centered around the midfield. However, ASU broke the scoreless tie when Makoski took a pass on the right side from senior Holly Azevedo and volleyed it pass USC goalkeeper Julie Peterson from about 5 yards out. The goal was Makoski's sixth of the year, tying her for the team high. The game-winner was also Makoski's team leading third and second in a row.
Each team then had their chances to score later in the second half, but the defenses would not allow much penetration down low before clearing the ball.
ASU and USC each tallied 10 shots on the day with eight of the Sun Devils shots going on goal. Peterson collected seven saves to keep the Trojans in the match, while ASU's Kim Bingham posted four saves. ASU held a slight 6-5 edge in corner kicks as well.
Up next, the Sun Devils will end their regular season up in the Pacific Northwest as they travel to Eugene to take on the Oregon Ducks on Friday, November 7 at 8:00 p.m. (Arizona time). ASU will then finish up in Corvallis on Sunday against Oregon State at 12:00 p.m.
